Browse All TopicsHi,
I'm a web designer and developer, and I have a hard time believing these professional SEO companies are anything more than a vaporCorp. They say that "unless you go with us you don't know what you're missing" . . . but of course they say that.
Myself, I write descriptive title tags, make sure the page content is near the top and its first couple sentences are spot-on ( I know a decent amount about Google's PageRank, PigeonRank, and how Google indexes sites ) . . . so, asking the pros out there, do the services of a professional SEO firm make a significant difference unachievable through ordinary means, and do you think this industry niche is a viable one that will persist?
Thanks much,
-Joe

I agree with Leafs_Fan in that if you do not want to take the time or have no interest in doing optimization yourself seo is a viable solution. There are many things to look at when choosing company, as there seems to be an unreal amount of bad apples out there. I would start by searching for term search engine optimization on Google and going from there. If a company can not get listed high for there own keywords, they most likely are not going to do well for your site. Also be leary of anyone promising you to be #1 foryour keyword, there is no way this can be guaranteed as there are too many varibles, the basic goal is to help you choose appropriate keywords and optimize them for you using a variety of tactics which will not get you banned, i.e. incomeing links, title text, link anchor test, keyword density etc... Any company that has any hidden text, sets up free for all links and other discouraged methods avoid.
I would reccomend taking some time to learn about how everything works and do it yourself. It is much more rewarding and you will not have to rely on someone elses choices. You can find help at so many forums and can ask questions here.
For minor_prophet, seo is "search engine optimization" meaning optimizing a site to rank well in search engines. Basically involves in finding and choosing keywords that are searched for often and yet low competition (sometimes) and optimizing your site to show up well for those keywords.
I agree with Leaf_Fan also, I actaully took the time out and learned SEO and I am glad I did because I was able to get one of the sites that my partner did into a number three spot in aol search under an important keyword, like bike riding the more you do it the better you get. You just cann't do one or two and that's it. One thing some people don't realize that you sometimes have to submit month after month like clock work if not you could lose your spot. I notice that some sites say guarentee listing I say that they are the search engines getting suckers into paying more then they should. Listen there is plenty of material to read out there on the net about SEO and one of my Favrotie books is 101 way to promote your website. I think doing it yourself is the greatest reward to know that your hard work was not just for nothing
Okay, I'm with you guys on what you've said so far right. Pretty logical, makes sense. I want to cover all the bases on this question that I can, so I'm doubling the points and adding another part to the question:
What elements constitute a complete SEO of a site? Kaitech, you mentioned repeated submits to certain search engines . . . which brings up the question, which search engines are actually relevant? I mentioned a couple of the optimization points I regularly institute on my client sites: descriptive title tags, useful content in the first couple of 'grafs . . . so what else is there?
Thanks,
Joe
You know what That is a very good question, especially since the search enigne landscape is changing. What engines are relevant? Hmmmmm....... I honestly would not be able to answer that since you may different views on that question.
MSN is important
Google is important probably more then MSN
Yahoo is important
DMOZ is important but tricky to get listed but once listed aol seaarch will pick it up so will the following, Hotbot, Lycos, Ask Jeeve. I personally feel that this are the major ones that should be submitted too.
It seems nowadays that link popularity is just as if not a bigger factor in getting high ranks.
What you are already doing for your pages is fine, I do similar meta tags and all. Also adding the alt text for the images helps, adding a robots.txt file in the server telling what pages to crawl and what not to of course, heading tags for each main topic in the page.
I also insert a tag telling a engines robot how often to come back and crawl usually 14 days
Each person will be different you have to find what work for you.
Well imo google is 80% of all SE traffic. Yahoo, msn, aol are all just a bonus's now. The problem with that is googles been broken for the past 2 months and it's pissing me off. It's missing about 90% of all my inbound links and the PR toolbar is broken. I suspect when they changed the algorithims a couple months ago they broke the toolbar somehow. I also noticed that google has turned off the spam filters on their results so you could always do some spammy stuff until the filters are turned back on but I wouldn't recommend that.
Other then what you guy have listed I would say the most important is the quality of your inbound links. Don't have spammers link to you, try to get relevent links, and if the google toolbar was working I would say get links from high PR sites. The days of paying for links on high PR sites is over but that worked wonders for a couple months.
Basically, in my experience linkage is a very important issue, including internal links - google cares a lot about what pages link to you and what *words* are used to link to you. Therefore, if a bunch of site related to golf clubs use the term "golf clubs" to link to you, you will have a boost in ranking in "golf clubs"
Title and content count a lot as well - meta-tags don't.
Any SEO firm that guarantees to get you top positions, is not to be trusted.
Any SEO firm that promises to get your site a lot of links from their own web sites (most likely link farms) is not to be trusted.
Any SEO firm that says the search engines can be fooled is not to be trusted.
SEO is not really that complicated. First create a web site that achieves the object your business has for that web site. In other words, if you want to sell products on the internet, create a good web site that sells the product. It does not do a lot of good to get a lot of people to come to the web site, if it is not an effective web site.
Now for SEO. Be sure that your important pages have a lot of text, usually at least 250 words or more. However, having a few pages with less text and some pages with more is good. Each page should target two or three keywords -- and pages with similar keywords should be linked. Be sure that the title for each page includes the keywords. Put the key words in the filename. Put the key words in the ALT tags for images. Put the key words in the text used for incoming links. (Never have "Click here" as the text in a link.) And put the key words in the page description.
You don't need to submit your web site to search engines. A web site won't be listed until the search engine detects links to that web site, and when it finds links it has found your web site. So you need to concentrate on getting links. Be sure to submit it to DMOZ. If there are any industry associations that you are a member of, most lists member's web sites. Also look for industry specific directories and submit you web site to them.
In Google do a search for your keywords and check the top web sites to see who is linking to them. (In Google search for the word "link" followed by the bURL of the web site.) This will help you find web sites that might link to you.
If you, or your friends, have other web sites, but in a link (just one) to your web site.
Also, on your web site, be sure to have a site map that lists every page. This makes it easy for the search engine spider to find every page. Be sure there is a link from your home pageb to the site map.
If the SEO says they are going to do things such as those listed above, that's the one to go with.
I honestly will not pay for something that I can do my self it is a waste of money that at times is hard to come by to begin with. It honestly does not take long to do this things, especailly if you implement them while you are designing the site. I just don't think I would spend the money when I can use that same money and pay for other type of marketing, like PPC and other types of advertising.
Thats my take on the Issue
So my answer is yes SEO firms are full of it and I wouldn't go for them esepcailly since I do it myself!!!!

I think it all depends on the extent of your knowledge of SEO. If I knew nothing about it and didn't want to spend the time to figure it out then yes SEO firms would be a route to take. Would I use one? Hell no, it's not like they have any special knowledge or tools that the rest of us can't figure out.
