Thank you pete, I am concerened, because our sales dropped, 300% from last year. I Saw a few words, I don't understand, like High usage, I assume that is for sites, like Experts-Exchange.Nert The Company Tele Speed "SDSL, is that a site that assures that your site will be in the search engines, with a good ranking, at least on the first two pages

You might find a quite read for an hour through the tutorial here http://www.seo-guy.com/tutorial.html quite useful.

Can you repeat the url of your site again (because the link you gave does not work) and I will take a look at it for you.

DUZ, here it is >www.boylesilkfloralsupply.com< sorry, quite sloppy of me. No wonder I am not getting customers  Jim

by: duzPosted on 2004-05-03 at 12:10:54ID: 10980637

Jim -

OK I took a good look and to be quite frank the whole site is a complete mess.  Sorry to be so blunt but I just hope to God that you didn't pay anyone to do it for you.

There is absolutely no point in trying to tune this site for the search engines as it is at the moment.  It would be like trying to enter a Formula One race with a model T Ford.  No matter what you did to make it go faster it would still never compete on equal terms.

The good news is that as a relatively small static (non-dynamic) site it should not cost an arm and a leg to redo it and get back into business.

Sorry to be the bearer of such bad news but it's better you know now rather than find out later.

duz, You just knocked me off my chair,
1- yes I did pay for it, but for two years I have been listed in the top 6 on at least 10 of the top sites, like google Hot Bot, Yahoo etc, and I am getting a lot os prais, because it is easy to get around?????   Jim

Jim -

Sorry to knock you off your chair, I really am.

When you were listed in the top 6 what search term(s) was that for?

It does not really matter where you were in the search engines but it does matter where you are now.  The search engine algorithms have improved enormously over the last few years and months.  What worked in the past does not necessarily work now, as you can tell from your own site.

I am not sure about the praise you are getting because although it is quite easy to navigate there are lots of usability issues. Does anyone complain about the missing pictures? For example the Sygonium Hanging Greens Bush on http://www.boylesilkfloralsupply.com/hanginggreens.html or the counter that displays "Error getting data etc."  or that when you click on a picture for an enlargement you get "The page you are looking for cannot be found." for example the 'Tower Tree'.  Users make up their minds in a few seconds and if they don't like it they move on.

Well actually I know the answer to that question - no one complains to you about these things for the simple reason that they are long gone! It is not like bricks and mortar where the potential customer has made an investment by walking into the store and finding an alternative would cost time and effort.  On the web you are only ever a couple of clicks and a second away from your competitors.

Hi, Jim:

I think saying that your website is a "complete mess" is a little harsh, but duz does have some good points about areas that need improvement, broken links and such.

However, my comments pertain to your source code.  It's a *complete mess*.  (lol)  Sorry, couldn't resist.  But actually, I think you may be having a problem with the search engines, because it seems you're spamming your keywords, especially the word, "flower."  There are limits, and the search engine spiders will quickly crawl off in other directions if they see the word "flower" mentioned 250 times in your metatags.  The insertion of hidden text via the comments tag, and really just about all of your metatags are spamming.  Why is the Keyword Metatag entered multiple times?  I think your metatags need a complete overhaul first off.  Then try resubmitting your site again.

You do not have a Content-Type (Charset) meta and the doctype is missing. Not compulsory but good practice as you are using a generator like FrontPage.  Also clicking on your logo on any page brings up an error page. Thought you would like to know :)

To Duz:  I switched hosts, and they required a different file name for the home page.  I forgot I had linked to my home page in my flash banner!  Thanks, Duz.  Not sure which page you are referring to with the meta tags missing though.  My home page has them.  Maybe it was an inside page?

To Mod:  Please accept my apologies for including my link in my sig.  I would never intentionally violate board policy.  Corey can vouch for me.  ;-)   I thought I had seen someone else do it and assumed it would be okay.  Won't happen again.

Well, Too say the least i am confused, The missing pic's are my fault, when I am out of stock on an item I remove a letter so the pic will not show up. I know it is not the proper way. I can correct this. But everythingelse I am lost. What must i do to get back in business. and how much will it cost me. I'm in the red now.
I want to thank both you duz and bubbels, for bringing this to my attention

Jim -

I had another (longer) look and found hidden text following this line:

<FONT face=Helvetica color=#fefefe size=-1>

This colors the text almost white and since it is on a white background is therefore hidden.

Google is able to determine that text has been hidden this way and that is why the site has been banned from the index and does not appear for your search terms.

Duz, if you noticed All my html pages are similar, except for parts of the body.
The html, head, Meta name Description, and Meta name Content, plus much more, there must be a way to correct one page for all, isn't there, I hope?????

Jim -

It depends on the editor that you use.  Some editors do have global 'find and replace' functions. There are also utilities that do this, search on Google for something like "find replace batch text".

If you are tempted to go down this route (and I would advise against it!) make sure you only 'find and replace' on a *COPY* of all your files because there is great potential for making irreversible errors.

Repeat: Don't work with the original files then you can always get back to where you were.
