Question

Adwords: "unacceptable content" -- now what?

Asked by: softplus

I just started with adwords for my companys sites (yeah, better late than never... argh.) and was talking about it to my brother in law. He's in a tax-free cigarette MLM (don't even ask :)) and asked me to run some ads to promote his site with his referrer-ID for a couple of european countries.

I checked google, there were tons of sites on the big list of keywords, lots of ads running. Google even suggested better keywords for me :). So I started a adwords-campaign in my account (no, I never bothered to check the guidelines as there were tons of similar ads running), which started quite nicely. Some of the keywords however weren't toggeling any ads, but hey, it's a start.

Until today that is, when I get a mail from google saying they suspended the ads, because they're "unacceptable content" (i.e. tobacco = not allowed). I check google again and all the other ads are gone as well. Search engine placement is all the same. Huh???

My questions to the experts (just wanting to gain some insight, I checked some other sites, but still have some questions):

1) Is my account "marred", i.e. should I open a new account? I still have my other adwords campaigns running...

2) How does this happen? Is this a weekly / monthly / daily thing? (automatically checked for keywords?) Are the keywords now completely "blocked" or is this a one-time-check?

3) What do the bigger sites do about this? Do they just change the text and resubmit the ads and hope for another week of runs? Get new accounts?

4) Where else should I be asking these questions? I'm sure lots of other people have had this happen, I just couldn't find that many (mostly found the "but my site is ok" comments...).

Thanks guys!

Tobacco ads are on the list of ads that are not allowed (see https://adwords.google.com/select/contentpolicy.html).  This has been true since at least the end of last year, so I'm not sure why the ads would vanish just now.  Essentially, Google has taken the approach that they don't want to help promote harmful products, even if they're legal.  It's their prerogative whether we agree or disagree with it.

Your account isn't marred, but you should probably learn your lesson and read the guidelines now.  But if you start trying to sneak through ads they don't want, it will be.  My advice is to accept it and move on.

Humeniuk, thanks for your comments. Yes, afterwards I saw that tobacco ads are not allowed; afterwards is always a bad time for things like that :) - but with so many other ads running I didn't bother to think it might not be allowed ;).

My other ads are still running, so I think my account's probably ok. Might have a yellow flag somewhere, but that shouldn't bother me.

But still, I'm wondering - is this a general clean-up action on googles side (i.e. get rid of and block tobacco keywords completely, after having been allowed for a while) or is it something that keeps returning (i.e. a weekly cleanup-script)? I imagine - even though they're on the list - that Google might be inclined to "tolerate" these ads for a while (they probably generate alot of turnover) and then clean up every now and then (to stay on their policies) -- i.e. shut one eye, cash in, and then act "clean". Or am I thinking too much into this? :))

"afterwards is always a bad time for things like that"
Yes, but it could be worse :)

"My other ads are still running, so I think my account's probably ok. Might have a yellow flag somewhere, but that shouldn't bother me."
If you want to be sure, send Google an email along the lines of 'sorry, wasn't aware, won't do it again, hope this won't affect my account'.  You'll likely get a response that will clarify things.

"I'm wondering - is this a general clean-up action on googles side ... or is it something that keeps returning"
I suspect that it's a sweep that runs from time to time because these ads tend to disappear in groups as you described, but I don't know the intervals.  It may be from time to time, it may be when a certain threshold (ie. number of ads) is passed.

"Google might be inclined to 'tolerate' these ads for a while (they probably generate alot of turnover) and then clean up every now and then (to stay on their policies) -- i.e. shut one eye, cash in, and then act 'clean' "
You're not the first person to suggest this :)  There are a number of people who have been somewhat peeved that they were shut down after spending a bunch of money.  I'm tempted to dismiss it because Google appears to be genuine in their 'keep it clean' approach.  Also, ads are Google's cash cow, why would they risk the program's integrity by playing games.  On the other hand, sometimes idealism isn't very profitable - money is money and business can be a blood sport.

"Or am I thinking too much into this?"
Your guess is as good as mine.  As above, I doubt it.  But I've been living in the real world long enough to know there's nothing so dirty that you won't find somebody, somewhere who will do it for cash.

I just checked: all the ads except "bulk marketing / bulk email" and "casinos" are gone. I bet alot of people are a bit upset (and some alot) ;)). Let's see if they stay gone, I mean it should be no problem for them to just deny keywords (maybe bulk email and casinos are too hard to weed out automatically?) Interesting things I missed out on so far :D

It would be interesting to keep an eye on it.

Well, everything's still gone, so it looks like they cleaned up "for good", probably banning those keywords (which makes it stange that they haven't so far). Apparently Google is in the middle of a big update (pagerank is also gone since a few days), something the other forums have called "Bourbon" -- ironic, since they dropped the alcohol-ads as well :)). Lots of sites have gone up and down the search-engine-ratings in the last week or so, I wonder what they'll end up with.

Thanks for the feedback, humeniuk!
