Question

What is Wrong with my web site???!

Asked by: Steve234

hi,

I recently ran an ad in a large weekly ezine.  So far I had over 1230 people click on my ad's link and come to my battery web site, www.thebatteryshoppe.com  But not one of them has bought anything.  What is wrong with my web site?  Why wouldn't you buy from my site?

I've tried to do everything right by making it easy to find your devices battery, I accept 4 credit cards, I use secure encryption, I've included testimonials, no pop-ups, and I have full contact information including a live person answering the phone number 24/7.

Points will be split and shared with all who help and tell me why they would not buy from my site.  Other than ee, what other forums or places could I post this question?

Thank you.

Steve

2) Are your rates ok? why would i buy from you and not your competitor?
3) Does your site ranks well on search engines? ( i guess not)
4) Merchant you use is reliable?

ok visitors came from weekly ezine.

so

was the ad misleading? talking about some offer or promotion / discount not on the site?

by: Steve234Posted on 2005-05-29 at 13:00:27ID: 14105451

Thank you for your response.

Here is all my ad said:
"Need a Battery for your Laptop, Camcorder, Phone or Camera?
We stock batteries, battery chargers, and power adapters for over 40,000 different manufacturers makes and models."

No offer or promotion  other than standard discounts of 5% to 30% clearly shown on each product.  And nothing misleading.  And the ad was not a pop-up or anything that forced people to click on the link to get rid of it.  So I would assume they were considering buying a battery otherwise they would not have clicked on the ad's link.

The merchant is very reliable with next day shipping and the customer's choice of shipping method of ground, next day, 2 day or 3 day delivery, and priced exactly what UPS would charge, no padding of shipping prices and no handling fees or any hidden costs.  And the credit card processing works flawlessly.

My site doesn't rank with the natural search engines.  I've paid a lot of money to "SEO experts" to fix that, but no one has been successful with that yet.  But my question is, if you were looking for a battery, why would You not buy from my site?

Thanks.

Steve

I assume you've done a whole Business Justification / ROIs before you took up this project and implemented it.

What in your opinion separates your site from the rest? Discounts? Deliveries? Value added services? Whatever it is - highlight it right up there - a flash banner or maybe an animated GIF. People should get excited and enticed into buying your products. I saw a promotion on your site that said:

  "Quote of the Week"
  and possibly win a
  FREE battery of your
  choice.

and guess what - it was at the end of the page. No animation - no colors - no design element - just plain text.

I apologise if I'm being rude here - but at first glimpse - the design of the site needs a serious overhaul. It looks less likely to be a genuine website although I take your word that it IS entirely genuine. You need a more corporate/professional look and feel - internet users these days are careful of frauds before they give those 16 important digits. Right now - it looks like it was launched in a hurry and is more of a site that eats up CC nos (like the million others) rather than one that services customers genuinely. Presentation improvement - especially that "header" on top - it tries to tell too much too fast.

To give you an understanding of how important look and feel is - visit http://www.starbucksstore.com/ - they sell coffee. Give starbucks 8 out of 10 for their site - how much would you rank yours? Also - 20 coffee customers and 50 laptop battery customers - how many of those 20 would go on and purchase from SBucks - how many of those 50 would purchase from yours?

I am surprised that you couldn't get a decent SEO expert for thejob - see the following links that may help you evaluate an SEO expert before you hire him.

http://www.experts-exchange.com/Web/Online_Marketing/Q_21441479.html
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Web/Online_Marketing/Q_21441478.html

Also - ensure that the branding and design of your online media (the website, banners) are complemented by the offline media. You can't have too many inconsistencies between the two - potential customers are hoping for something they see in the newspaper AD - you cannot present them something totally different online.

I hope you consider my criticism as constructive - what I've commented upon is in the best interests of traffic hitting your website. These are my perceptions - maybe other experts can comment on whether I am correct or wrong - and where I went wrong. The more feedback - the better for the business to make decisions.

Cheers ... Sandil

Incidentally - before/as soon as we launch a site that is similar in nature to yours - we sent a BETA link to all the people we know - asking them what they think about the site - these include potential customers too. You can try out an electronic survey before you make changes to your website.

Cheers ... Sandil

Steve234 -

>Why wouldn't you buy from my site?

When you run any online advertising campaign it is essential to track the users who visit your site as a result of clicking on the ad.

Tracking software will enable you to answer your question quite accurately by giving you the statistics for each particular ad,  at what point (page) did they choose to leave the site and how many ended up purchasing a/the product and other useful data.  These statistics enable you to calculate the ROI and iteratively improve the ad content/placement to increase the ROI.

In your case an analyse of the drop-off pages would have told you what was wrong. For example I have seen tracking statistics show that users are happy to select a product but drop-off during the payment process because it's overly complicated or it asks for information they do not want to give. I am not saying that is the case but merely give it as an example of how tracking users and analyzing the statistics will tell you nine time out of ten what is putting off users from making a purchase.

I will try a comment to here even if I am a small one among those titans in EE.
Try to insert a pop up in your page wich ask the people that came to your site
about their opinion about the site, and they reasons that they had to come
in the first place, and to go without buying anythig.

Second of all traffic is that sells so do a massive traffic exchange campaign and
bring  visitors to your site, even if they don't buy then they may come back knowing
where to come.

I hope that help a litle to
Good luck

yes, thank you everyone!

I have carefully read and reread every line in this post.  Thank you all so much, your feedback is really appreciated.  And you can believe I will be implementing these suggestions.  I also like the idea of the exit pop-up, and only have it come up if they don't purchase something, and have it offer a discount coupon.

What are your suggestions for a traffic exchange campaign?

My big problem now is finding another programmer who can work more than one day a week to start implementing these suggestions, but I guess finding a good php osc programmer is another post.

Thank you all again.

I'll leave the question open a little longer to see if there are any other suggestions.

Steve

If you do that make very sure the users who have just made a purchase don't get to see it! Also be prepared for the majority of users to have a popup blocker.

True, definitely don't want those making a purchase or checking on a purchase already made in the past to see the pop-up.  Only those leaving without making a purchase are to see the pop-up.

Thank you everyone for your comments and help.
