Do you plan to advertise to hire an SEO professional? I guess these are basic necessities for such a profile:
1. Good understanding of popular search engine's indexing methodologies
2. Planning for SEO - how to ensure that your site's DESIGN and STRUCTURE is SEO compliant
3. Implementing SEOs in compliance with W3C and search engine standards
4. Understanding Google's PageRank algorithm i.e. the more the external links pointing to that site - higher a PageRank value
5. Maintaining and monitoring the display index of a site/sites in given search engine
6. Providing statistics for each site i.e. before SEO - how many hits/day, 6 months afer SEO - n hits/day, 1 year after SEO - m hits/day
7. How to ensure updates are listed immediately on search engines
8. Ensuring SECURE/DYNAMIC CONTENT is NOT listed on search engines
9. Understanding how businesses can benefit from paid advertisements in Google
SEO involves both content and navigational element integration. An SEO consultant should maintain a checklist of all items that are SEO compliant and implement this checklist in the organizations policies - hence - any future site going live with this organization HAS to go through this SEO compliance process where the professional signs off the project after he sees necessary SEO compliancy complete - similar to a security audit.
Hope that helped.
Cheers ... Sandil
