I agree with BrenaeDC. The number of words depends largely on your target audience. The keys are to be short as possible so not to bore your audience but still contain enough information to keep them interested. You'll find some 140 character tweets on some search results, and you'll find 500+ technical readouts on other results.
I think the easiest way to optimize your article length is to know your industry and see the current results. Then see if you can shorten it without losing relevancy or lengthen it if you can provide more useful information.
Beyond fads and trends, 250 words is typically too short to keep a potential prospect's interest. Anything over two pages or a lot of scrolling will typically scare away most non-technical people. 250 is good for your own site because your site adds to your company's story, so you'll need more words to make up that part on other sites.

Hi Weikelbob-
If you want your article to spread around the web and be viral you should focus more on the content of the article, because with SEO "content is king". You should consider making the article engaging and easy to read by breaking up paragraphs and using bullet lists or numbered lists. Maybe consider adding in images and charts that help the user understand what you are writing about and want to share it with their friends.
Overall, their is no correct length that will get your article more seo friendly. Just try and get the point across in the least amount of words and try to really capture that user so they will link back to your site and share your article with friends.
Hope that helps :)
