Hi experts.

I have a simple HTML / flash site and I'd like to add a blog to it.

I've heard of several "third party" solutions that can be implemented on ones site and so I'd like your recommendations as to what would be the best way to go.

What I'm looking to have is something to use on my own site rather than using something like Blogger and such.

Depending on your hosting company - many now offer WordPress quick installs so you can add the blog to your website.

I would go with WordPress -- it's free/open source, easy to use (self-proclaimed 5-minute installs), extremely customizable,  has tons of support, plug-ins, themes, widgets, not to mention All-in-One SEO and Akismet, which keeps SPAM out.
