Referrer Spam

This is a first for me. I have a small client getting referrer spam.

For a small site it is getting a lot and now beats out google for source.

The main referrer is answered-questions.com  although this probably not really it.  This site is linked with http://www.chitika.com/advertisers.  I called Chitika and they say answered-questions.com is only a testing bed or where they place low level ads.

What should I be aware of with referrer spam from your experience?

Matt says to ignore it http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=QufRT-Gd-UI

Maybe the best thing is to built a trap and if a referrer like this comes in, just give it a blank page.

What is the actual problem?  I would just ignore it.

ASKER

I am.

The client was spending money on adwords and was doing well.  Now he said the amount of money he was spending was growing slightly but the actual calls/emails slowed down.

A couple of months ago, I caught his competitor using google adwords with his name, linking to their (competitor) site.  Then this happens. It's probably a coincidence.

I don't think I fully understand the point of referrer spam.   I could see if you want to target webmasters/site owners who look at stats.   If you are the type that looks at stats, how could you fall for something like this?  I just wonder if there is another motive I am missing.
