Question

Redirect https to http via htaccess for certain pages only

Asked by: dynamic3

I'm on a Unix server running Apache/1.3.36. I purchased an SSL, had it installed, and now there are "http" and an identical "https" address for each page on the site - meaning if you visit http://www.mydomain.com and https://www.mydomain.com they both show up. For SEO purposes, we want to make sure we are only showing one version of a page.  There are only 4 pages that need the SSL and they are in a directory called "secure". For the rest of the pages on the site (about 125 pages), I want the https version, if called, to 301 redirect to the http version of the page. What is the best way to edit the htaccess file to accomplish this goal?

I found plenty of examples of how to redirect pages from http to https, just not the other way around. And we can't do a blanket redirect for the site without harming the 4 pages that actually need to be https. I do have a list of all the pages on the site and if needed can write a redirect for each individual page, but I don't know what to write for https to http, please provide that info if this is in fact the best route to take.

In the httpd.conf file.  You will want to add the following:

<VirtualHost *:80>
  Redirect permanent / https://www.mydomain.com
</VirtualHost>

After reading the details of your post..     Look at this article.

http://www.cgi-interactive-uk.com/apache_redirect_directive.html

It lists how to redirect intended pages.

Usually, people don't worry about https redirecting to http.   You can use the redirect to https and only publish the http address.

But that isn't correct, (as far as i can tell) those suggestions in the link you provided would work if it was a different page or a different domain that i was directing to.

Redirect /tutorials.html http://www.cgi-interactive-uk.com/tutorials.html

What the line above does is cause an error that states "redirect is incorrect, the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete." because i am not indicating that the originating page is https. If i put in the full address like this it doesn't work.

Redirect https://www.cgi-interactive-uk.com/tutorials.html http://www.cgi-interactive-uk.com/tutorials.html

I am using the htaccess file and not the httpd.conf  to do this. So the problem is still not resolved yet...

You may want to read: http://www.webmasterworld.com/apache/3406759.htm

It has the following (I beleive the second comment should start off "read direct secure pages").   You must have two re-writes.

One re-writes the pages you want using https to using https.  The other re-writes the pages you want to use http to use http. Otherwise once you switch to https, everything will be https.

One question, why do you care that some of the pages are accessed using https?

#
# redirect non-secure pages to http if requested by httpS

RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} ^443$
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI}!^/(register¦user¦action)$
RewriteRule ^/(.*)$ http://www.mysite.com/$1 [R=301,L]

#
# redirect non-secure pages (/user, /register or /action) to httpS if requested by http

RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT}!^433$
RewriteRule ^/(register¦user¦action)$ https://www.mysite.com/$1 [R=301,L]

The example you supplied is informative, yet lacking the detail i need. The solution webmasterworld.com supplied is for "a file named mysite.conf where there are VirtualHosts defined". I'm not familiar with writing a .conf file. Can i just create one? Where can i find help on this issue?

I'm hoping though that this can be accomplished with the htaccess file instead. The RewriteCond that they used did look as though i could put those line in the .htaccess file, but what symbol is missing there when it shows the black box with a question mark in it between (register, user and action) for this line:

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI}!^/(register¦user¦action)$

Plus, 95% of the files that show up as https and need to redirect to http are in the public_html and /article directory. The /secure directory holds a few files that actually need to be secure. So i'd want everything outside of /secure to be http, and everything inside /secure to be https.

I tried the RewriteCond that you cited but it errored out. One reason could be because I don't have the server port indicated? All i used was from rewrite engine down to the last line of the rewrite rule.

The issue is you can type in both the http and https versions of a URL and there is a live page. I have been told that this could pose a problem with our SEO efforts, i.e. two URLs showing the same content. Because to my understanding, Google would see the http and https as two separate pages, and two identical pages isn't a good thing.

So is our SSL installed incorrectly, that it would secure the whole site like this  instead of just the directory that we want it to secure? Did we purchase the wrong type of SSL (we purchased it for www.mysite.com instead of www.mysite.com/secure)?

Still stuck.

I will need to read your post a little more. But I will answer some of your questions.

You can't purchase a certificate for a "directory" only for a host name.  That is you can't buy a certificate for www.mysite.com/secure only for www.mysite.com.  So you got the only certificate you could have gotten.

If you are not using port 443 for SSL traffic you are going to have problems no matter what you do.

Why do you want things outside of "/secure" to be http?  Why not let everything be https?

by: chingmdPosted on 2007-09-28 at 07:46:25ID: 19979032

After thinking about this a little more I'm thinking that the requirements you've stated may need to be rethought.

Typically, an increased security on something that doesn't need it and it doesn't cost anything, doesn't matter.   Essentially, ensure security on that which needs it, and allow it on anything that doesn't
But you did mention it was a SEO requirement.

and an article on redirect.
http://www.cgi-interactive-uk.com/apache_redirect_directive.html

and another using rewrite rules.  (in htaccess)
http://www.whoopis.com/howtos/apache-rewrite.html

To accomplish what you want, I believe that you will need to implement 2 htaccess files.

One at the top level that rewrites to http
RewriteRule ^/(.*)         http://fully.qualified.domain.name/$1 [L,R]

then

In the secure directory

another .htaccess that forces https
RewriteRule ^/(.*)         https://fully.qualified.domain.name/$1 [L,R]

Based on how htaccess rules are applied, this should work for you.

After much review and research, we have decided that we are going to leave the site in its current state without employing a redirect. With SEO as the motivator and finding many sites with http and https versions of a page ranking in the top 5, we have decided that this a non-issue.

Thank you so much for your attention.
