I'm relatively new to SEO, having been introduced to it about a year or so ago. Our company uses a for-hire firm to direct all of our SEO activity. My project manager and I have gone through independent research, mostly to double-check the strategy of the firm so we know if we're wasting our money. Since the background question touched on something we felt was settled, I need to revisit it.

I'd like to know which aspects of a website/page are used by a search engine, and how they are weighted. Any hints or tips you can give will be appreciated, but I'm more interested in documented evidence. This question originated with a discussion on the keyword attribute, but I'd also like to know about description, <title>, alt/caption attributes, and of course overall content.
