display:hidden property?

Hello,
i'm about to doing a website providing useful documents. and trying to find good way to have visitors through search engines. finally we are about 2 choices:

1- using display:hidden and disallow search engines to read documents directory through robots.txt
the website scribd.com recommends users to use the code   <div style='display:none' > in order to view the full texts of documents because its easier for google than swf.
they say that it legal and google will not consider it spam!  or trying of cheat.

what do u think about the css code display:none? can i use it to view documents?

2- another question is about .doc files, is it easy for google to read? is it like html?
