Question

Changing Domain name listed in google index.

Hey,

We have one website with one index file.

We have 2 domain names pointing to the same index file on the same server.

In google, we are listed under domain1.com. We want to change it so it displays as domain2.com

What should we do to change this?

Not: Google webmaster tools doesnt help. Only allows you to add or remove the www prefix.

well i have never come across such a service from google...the best i think you can do is wait until google refreshes its index which is a random between 1 week to 2 months and it will come up with the correct index file then

Redirect domain1.com to domain2.com using a permanent (301) redirect.  Google will begin to list domain2.com instead (though it won't be immediate).  This is also the only way to effectively preserve the value of the incoming links to domain1.com.

How do you do the 301 redirect when both domains point to the exact same index file?

That's what you will have to change - have domain1.com point elsewhere, ie. a different hosting account, and set up the redirect in your .htaccess file.  It's not as simple and painless as what you're doing now, but it is responsible SEO and will accomplish what you are looking to do.
