DNS Redirect Vs HTTP Redirect

Hi,

I've got an old domain I need to redirect to another new domain - but 'old domain' has great search engine rankings. In order to preserve these, is it best to use my Domain Registrar's DNS forwarding (which offers 301 permanent as an option) or use the HTTP method? I would prefer to use the DNS method as it would save me having to keep an old web server alive...

Is the new site the same as the old site?

Idealy you want to make sure all the old pages 301 redirect to the equivalent page on the new website.

If you 301 every page to the root of the new domain then the other pages in your new website will loose out. (This is what I think your DNS forwarding will do).

Hi Tiggerito,

No, the new site is VERY different from the old site. The old site was three static HTML pages built in 1997, the new site is fully dynamic with 30 pages, etc. In terms of being search engine friendly, are they not going to like being forwarded to the home page instead of what the search engine is expecting?

What do you mean by 'other pages will loose out'?

Any idea how long I would need to keep the HTTP 301 redirects before converting to DNS?

If its only a few pages it will not harm redirecting all to the new home page.

I was considering the scenaria whre you have 100s of pages which would map well from the old website to the new. In that case you want to provide the visitors and search engiones with the best experience (i.e. send them to an appropriate page on the new website).

301 redirects also tranfer some page rank over to the new pages. If you had 100s of pages all redirecting to the home page then you will only have the home page get the benefit from those page ranks. It is better that you spread the joy and distribute the page rank a bit.
