The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

Understanding servers and IP addressesÂ…

Hi,

I'm a real novice in this area so please accept my apologies if this is a stupid question.

I currently have a website at www.masterofmalt.co.uk which is hosted by a company called "Scotweb" (www.scotweb.com).  A few months ago I registered the domain masterofmalt.com through a company called "FreeParking" (A low-cost domain registration and parking outfit, freeparking.co.uk) intending to point it to my site at www.masterofmalt.co.uk.

Now, FreeParking lets me change details of my Zone File online.  So I thought if I found out the IP address of my site by pinging www.masterofmalt.co.uk and then set the IP address in the Zone File associated with the "www" bit of my domain to the IP address of www.masterofmalt.co.uk I could have both the .co.uk and .com domains pointing to my site.

But I was wrong.  For some reason, I was directed to "burns.scotweb.com" (I get the same thing if I type the IP address into my browser), I couldn't understand this because when I ping say, www.amazon.com, and then type the corresponding IP into my browser I get straight to www.amazon.com!

I thought that each computer on the net had its own IP address and that an IP was totally equivalent to a domain name but there is obviously something going on here that I don't understand so if anyone could set me straight on what is going on I would be most grateful.
