Question

Stock Ticker on Intranet page for corporation

Asked by: BorgPicard

My company would like to have their stock ticker on the main page for employees to see.  They would like it to just update when someone opens and views that page instead of creating an application to do this.

I have looked all over, but obviously in the wrong places.  I simply want it to return the text of the stock price.  (I.E. MSFT $52.34 or IBM $9.33).

Thanks
Corey

check this out...

http://www.alphasierrapapa.com/iisdev/components/asptear/

this (free) component will allow you to tear out part of another page (say off of Yahoo Finance or something similar) with your company's stock quote.

i am sure this will do what you are looking for...there might also be stock sites that will provide you with code for doing such a thing, but i don't know any off hand...

I'm concerned that you are going against EE policy by posting links to tools such as that brunobear.......

Do Yahoo Finance permit you to "tear" from their pages?!?!

I do not want to "tear" anything out.  That sounds illegal as part of copyright laws...

Ant,

I do not mean to go against any policy.

NOR am i suggesting to tear anything FROM Yahoo...i used that as an example, because that is the site I am familiar with to get stock quotes.

I do not believe i am going against any policy, that is a legit ASP component.  We use one very similar on our intranet to get news feeds from certain sites.  The only difference is the component I posted to is free.

HOWEVER, using that component would allow Borg to do what he was looking to do.

>>I do not want to "tear" anything out.  That sounds illegal as part of copyright laws...

Borg...this component would allow you to do what you are looking to do.  before you do it, it would just be common sense to check with the site you are trying to get information from and make sure you are not breaking any copyright laws.  I would hope you would do that anyways, regardless of how you end up going about what you are trying to do.

The component is very useful however you decide to use it.  You can use it to gather information from various pages on your site, together on one page.  It's not immoral, illegal, or unethical.

Thanks,

BRUNO

Okay...

Back to the question in hand, is it the case that you have the stock information, you just want it to be displayed in a ticker?

ALSO...

after checking Yahoo...

they list a lot of things that one is prohibited to use from their site.  Stock quotes are not one of these things.

http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/fin/fin-02.html

MSN MoneyCentral lists this in their TOS.

"Microsoft and its suppliers do not authorize the use of stock quote information for any purpose other than your personal use, and prohibit to the maximum extent allowable the resale, redistribution, and use of this information for commercial purposes. "

As it did not sound like you are using this for a commercial purpose, only information, I would say you might be able to use information from their site.

whatever you do, just check the legalese first!

Ant,

I do not think he has the information at all.  He just wants to find a way to show a current stock price on his companies intranet site.

I'm not quite sure this is what you want but it is a great stock ticker.  If you go to www.nasdaq.com and click ticker on the nav bar.  You can get a fully customizable ticker in the form of a java applet that runs independently of the nasdaq site.

If that is what you are looking for, you may be able to work out an arrangement with nasdaq to use it.

We have a range of tickers available at http://www.objects.com.au/products/tickersrus which we can customise to meet individuals needs.

Displaying live stock data is not a problem, but be aware that as most tickers I've seen are implementewd as Java applets then you'll also need some server component to interface between the stock data source and the applet. Reason being that the security restrictions on an applet only permit it to communicate with the server that it (the applet) originated from.

Wrap it up!

Honestly I think points to me, the component I posted (regardless of where the user decided to "tear" from) would have done exactly what they wanted.
