im looking to build a multiuser 5-8user maybe more in the future but for now up to 8 max which i can have a notes, customer, quoting system, etc....

i built a smaller scaled system on my home machine for myself and being a one user, it did most of the work im going to be building, i built it in php & mysql interface on a machine with 512mb ram and 2.8gig processor celeron.
i do know that php is a bit slower because it has to compile on server side before executing....

the problem i found was that it seemed to be a bit slow, even simple code running seemed a bit slow?
i was using apache 1.3 and windows xp pro with no other process's running?

could it have been something on my end or do you think i could continue to work with php for a 8user system internal backend simple tasked program?
will it be slow using mysql and php with a 8 user system i dont understand why it would because it is very popular language but i thought i would get some advice from experts?

i also was thinking of writing a 3 tier app in visual basic which will interface with a mysql or mssql database MSDE ?
i could also use Java, my perception of java is that it is slow, correct me if im wrong.

can anyone give me advice for building a simple tracking system and what language would be the fastest running application.
I have the option of windows server or linux so im not in any bind.

Anyone who built a multi user system and your note of opinions would be greatly appriceated.
