Good luck!

Time to go to a Mac because that page is as static as they come and if you can surf this site then you should be in the money on the site.

I do have google bar installed. And I have it installed for a long time, and this web site (www.bensbargains.net) has been working until last week. How could and why would the google toolbar affect this?

how can i ping this place?

by: T-SnipezPosted on 2004-12-28 at 22:36:53ID: 12917094

Sounds like you might have some spyware, or something related.  If infact it is Spyware, I would suggest you try out SpySweeper, the best anti-spyware tool out there.  You can download a demo at http://www.webroot.com/shoppingcart/tryme.php?bjpc=64000&vcode=DT02

You were also wondering how to ping that website, since you have windows xp, you would:
Click Start
Go to "Run"
Type in "cmd"
Then you are free to type in the command "ping" then after ping, type the address of the website.  So the command to ping BensBargains would be "ping bensbargains.net"

Hope that solves your problem!  Good luck!

This can be a number of things

1. Your isp is blocking this site
2. A router or firewall is blocking this site
3. DNS lookups for this site are failing on your pc

Cases should be processed in reverse order

Case 3
In a dosbox type nslookup bensbargains.net

The result should here is 72.3.156.41  you should get a similar ip number
Case 2
  * Try disabeling your firewall for a sec and look if you can access the site
  * Check your router settings (some routers allow blocking of sites)
Case 1
Ask your ISP if he is blocking this site

by: COBOLdinosaurPosted on 2004-12-29 at 07:53:31ID: 12919656

The fact that you are getting a Google page with references to the site you are trying to get incdicates that the url is being intercepted or re-directed to Google.  That could be because:

A - Google is punishing the site for some minor violations of Googles  numerous petty rules.
B - The Google cod has been corrupted.
C - Some kind of malware has attacked the Google toolbar and is using a parasitic relationship with it.

If you uninstall it, we determine if the Google tool bar is involved;  either way we know more than we do now.  Or we just sit and do nothing.  Enough time spent on this.  You are not going to solve anything until you start to take some action.  Theorizing is not going to solve anything.

This is the thread with most of the standard approaches to solveing problems with malware: http://www.experts-exchange.com/Web/Browser_Issues/Q_20975384.html

I d/l and ran spyseeper (probably a good idea regardless of this problem). I had it remove all the suspects it found.

But problem persists.

I should mention that I am connecting using t-mobile in various wireless hotspots (kinkos, starbucks, etc.) and all places i have the same problem with regard to this web page.

by: x_terminat_or_3Posted on 2004-12-29 at 12:04:31ID: 12921616

>But problem persists.

Did you do a reboot and rerun of spysweeper after that?
Also note that windows xp restores removed system files so it can be that windows reinfects itself.  To completly remove malware, you should disable temporarly that function..

Disabling System Restore

Windows ME and XP utilize a restore utility that backs up selected files automatically to the C:\_Restore folder. This means that an infected file could be stored there as a backup file, and VirusScan will be unable to delete these files. You must disable the System Restore Utility to remove the infected files from the C:\_Restore folder.

Disabling the System Restore Utility (Windows XP Users)

1. Right click the My Computer icon on the Desktop and click on Properties.
2. Click on the System Restore tab.
3. Put a check mark next to 'Turn off System Restore on All Drives'.
4. Click the 'OK' button.
5. You will be prompted to restart the computer. Click Yes.

Note: To re-enable the Restore Utility, follow steps one to five and on step three remove the check mark next to 'Turn off System Restore on All Drives'.

After that rerun the spyware remover, let it eat all unwanted ware.  Reboot and continue this procedure until no more unwantedware is found.  After that, restore the "Restore Utility"

Did you try

Case 1
Ask your ISP if he is blocking this site

by: T-SnipezPosted on 2005-01-02 at 09:37:02ID: 12939700

If you would like to see if your ISP is blocking that page.  Use my cgi-proxy at http://www.denile.info/cgiproxy/nph-proxy.pl and type in the address you want to go to.  If it loads, then your ISP is blocking that page.  If it doesn't, you are most likely having another problem.  Hope this helps!  Good luck!

Did you try

Case 1
Ask your ISP if he is blocking this site

well as I explained my ISP is T-Mobile, Starbucks, Kinkos, etc. They are different from place to place. And besides I have two laptops both using the same ISP! From one I can get the site and from the other I cannot.

by: Lisa0812Posted on 2005-01-02 at 12:30:47ID: 12940208

T-Snipez,

yes it loads.

but i cannot be that my isp is blocking this site as I explained in the previous comment.

by: x_terminat_or_3Posted on 2005-01-02 at 12:34:22ID: 12940217

OK... things are clearing up. . .

You have two laptops using the same ISP, and you can connect with one of them but not with the other..

Please tell us

when you say using the same isp do you mean that on your current location you have two laptopts that are connected to your isp the same way and that with one you can and with the other you can't.  Is that right?

BTW What is the result of the test proposed by T-Snipez?

Also, try www.grc.com .  Click on the ShieldsUp logo, proceed to ShieldsUP, press the button proceed, then Browser Headers and compare the result under "Your Browser's Request for THIS Page:
Here is the entire contents of your browser's request for this page:" with the same page on your other laptop.

If there are any differences, tell us here.

Humm... that's a tricky one.
If it works going through my cgi proxy, you probably want to get a proxy.  To simplify things: you would want to do the following:
1. Download Firefox (www.getfirefox.com)
2. Download SwitchProxy for Firefox (http://jgillick.nettripper.com/packages/switchproxy/switchproxy.xpi)
3. Find a proxy to use (http://www.publicproxyservers.com/)
4. Configure it to use with SwitchProxy
That should be a temporary solution!  Good luck!

by: x_terminat_or_3Posted on 2005-01-02 at 12:39:32ID: 12940231

How about this then

Check the laptop that works's proxy settings (in  internet explore) and compare it with the one that don't work.

x_terminat_or_3

my wife and  I have laptops. And we have two accounts with t-mobile hot spots which serve as our ISP. We have been using both laptops side by side in various Starbucks and Kinkos.

About T-Snipez - yes it loads.

I will try the other things you suggest tomorrow...

thanks
