First, there are 2 versions:
1 - Wordpress.com - free hosting but some limitations. You can pay for upgrades.
2 - Wordpress.org - the creator of the wordpress platform. You have to host it yourself or find a host that supports it. There are several that do it pretty cheaply.
It is pretty easy to setup and have running as well as easy to update and manage. The minimal knowledge for editing a page is basically using a text editor like word. There are many templates out there for use as well.
Option 1 limits your templates unless you pay, you have to use their domain (zzz.worpress.com) unless you pay ($15/yr for www.yourdomain.com).
Option 2 is a little more expensive ~ $70/yr.
I would suggest going to wordpress.com and signing up for a free one. Try it out and then make a decision. Browse other users sites and see what you are capable of.
The default setup is blog form, but you can make it look and act like a "standard" website with a blog included.
I personally think this would work well for you, especially if you dont have much webdesign experience.
Sorry that didnt work out for you. I found 3 sites that offer templates:
