Replacing unwanted characters in form using preg_replace()

Hello Folks,

I am using PHP Motion for my site and recently, I discovered that one video, which was already uploaded to the site, was not loading due to the fact that an apostrophe was used in the title input by the user e.g "Brazil in the 50's" Please note that I am referring to the title input in the site upload form and NOT the title of the actual video file.

An immediate fix for this problem was easy: I went into my PHP Motion admin, removed the apostrophe from the title as input by the user and the video loaded properly.

I would like institute a permanent fix and my thought is I could do this by adding preg_replace() to uploader.php, the form action file used to handle the data entered by user when they upload a video. My idea is to use a regex and have it find the most common unwanted characters and then replace them with an empty string.

The code for upload.php is provided below and my questions are:

*Where inside this existing code would I put the preg_replace()?

*Would I be able to use @str_replace for the same purpose instead of preg_replace()?
