Return code

Hi Experts,

I've a perl script that calls a shell script. I need to query the shell script's return code to determine if an error alert needs to be sent or if the job is ok. Exit code 0 & 1 from this job is acceptable, other values of course are problems (the 1 is a warning from this application).

The O/S is Sun Solaris.

The code with which I'm wrestling:

$BRcmd = ('thejob.sh');
system($BRcmd);
$returncode = $?;
if ($returncode > 1 ) {
$errormsg = 'batch job failed with return code of: ' . $returncode;
error_mail($errormsg, $opts{'mail-8'}, 1);
return false;
}
say('Finished step 4', 5);
}

I'm seeing a return code of 256 and cannot determine why. If I run the job at the command line and echo $?, I see 1 - which is what I'm expecting in this case. I've tried using back ticks, with the same result.
