Greetings pinaldave !

1. Clear your DNS cache.  Go to Start > Run and type CMD
and hit OK.
At the command prompt, type ipconfig /flushDNS
and hit OK.

2. Clear your cache.  Go to Tools > Internet Options > General tab.  Under Temporary Internet Files, click "Delete Files" button. Also click "Delete Cookies" button. Click OK.

3. If no joy, check if your PC is blocking the site.  Do a search for HOSTS file and open it with an editor like Notepad. Delete any line that has the blocked site in it.

HOSTS file is located in
Windows XP      =      C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Windows 2K     =     C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Win 98/ME     =     C:\WINDOWS

It is a hidden file. Go to any folder and select Tools > Folders Options > View. Check "Show hidden files and folders". Click OK.

4. If you are using Internet Explorer, check if the site is restricted or blocked.  Go to Tools > Internet Options > Security. Hightlight Restricted Sites and see if the blocked site is located there.

Also under Content tab > Content Advisor, check if the site is restricted there. Remove it.

Also, under Security tab, add the website to your trusted zone.

5. Check if antispyware, antivirus, or firewall is blocking the website.

6. Uninstall and reinstall the Network Interface card.

Best wishes, war1

Make sure cookies are enabled, as Google requires cookies to run.

Check your firewall or router to see if it is blocking www.google.com.  Allow the website in the firewall or router.

Check if anitivirus or antispyware is blocking the website. Allow the website in those programs.

by: pinaldavePosted on 2007-09-08 at 08:20:20ID: 19853528

Shehar, that is true. I have no one around me to ask.

War1, It is not blocked by firewall or Norton I tried. There is no other antivirus. I can go to gmail fine just not google.com :(

64.233.187.99 I can ping fine.

Regards,

by: SheharyaarSaahilPosted on 2007-09-08 at 08:24:01ID: 19853536

that means you can connect to google via IP address, its not blocked :)
only from http you cannot access it usng a browser
did you reset the modem or router?

by: war1Posted on 2007-09-08 at 08:25:19ID: 19853540

Oh, you can go to Gmail http://mail.google.com/mail, but not www.google.com  And you can ping 64.233.187.99.  So looks like a DNS issue.

You have flushed the DNS in your computer.  You have checked the HOSTS file to see if Google is being redirected.  You have added www.google.com to the Trusted Zone of IE?

by: pinaldavePosted on 2007-09-08 at 08:25:41ID: 19853542

Shehar you are true I was able to google using ip.
You are right. I am not worth blocking by google.
I will have to reset my router now.

by: pinaldavePosted on 2007-09-08 at 08:27:18ID: 19853547

War I can go to gmail.com not google.com/mail

I flushed dns and checked host file. I have not added google to trusted zone yet. I will do it once I reboot my router.

Thanks for all this advise.

btw....is it displaying Page Cannot Be Displayed or something else?

by: war1Posted on 2007-09-08 at 08:30:37ID: 19853558

pinaldave,

When you log in to Gmail, the address becomes http://mail.google.com/mail/xxxx

by: pinaldavePosted on 2007-09-08 at 08:32:52ID: 19853567

War1 you are correct. I am sorry.

Server not found

Firefox can't find the server at www.google.com

-------
IE it is turned off content filtering.

--------
Rebooted router and repaired connection. I am no more able to go to gmail now as well.

by: war1Posted on 2007-09-08 at 08:36:19ID: 19853580

pinaldave,

Check if you have a program running in the background blocking google.com.  Do you have anitspyware program? Sometimes it locks you out of websites.  Boot up to Safe Mode and test if you can access google.com with either Firefox or IE.

by: SheharyaarSaahilPosted on 2007-09-08 at 08:36:25ID: 19853582

Pinal i have a feeling that its not with your system only.....do you any other system to check google?

by: pinaldavePosted on 2007-09-08 at 09:11:01ID: 19853701

by: SheharyaarSaahilPosted on 2007-09-08 at 09:57:35ID: 19853830

what's the result from safemode with networking pinal?

by: pinaldavePosted on 2007-09-08 at 10:02:50ID: 19853844

I did not try that because when I connected neighbors internet (with their approval after requesting their network key) I was able to connect to google and everywhere. However, I reset my router and reconfigured it, it is still not let me connect google.

Very strange. I just have to check my modem I assume. Any other suggestion.

by: pinaldavePosted on 2007-09-08 at 10:07:42ID: 19853858

I have reset my modem as well same result.

by: pinaldavePosted on 2007-09-08 at 10:53:29ID: 19854019

Thank you All.

Thanks War and SheharyaarSaahil

by: SheharyaarSaahilPosted on 2007-09-08 at 11:14:03ID: 19854085

told you :)

by: pinaldavePosted on 2007-09-08 at 11:17:48ID: 19854095

You are correct Shehar (as always)

It has been long time since I was working as Network Admin, I just was not sure if any new technology sneaked in while I was busy working as Database Admin. However, you were to the point from the beginning that nothing wrong with my PC and It must be ISP.

Good to see you again online :)

Pinal

war1's 2007-08-09 step 3 is what fixed it for me in Windows XP

In c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc I ran:
attrib -h -r hosts
  - to unhide the file, and make it editable,
then edited hosts, commenting out the www.google.com line.
