Question

How do I get the favicon.ico in my website to appear in webpage bar of IE 8 - it works OK in other browsers

Asked by: Gordonuk

This code appears in the Head section of my website:

<link rel="shortcut icon" type="image/x-icon" href="http://www.a1tracks.com/favicon.ico" />
<link rel="icon" href="http://www.a1tracks.com/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />

I should like users of the website to see my own favicon when they access our site.

It works OK in Firefox and Opera but having "upgraded" to IE8 the IE icon appears there instead of mine.

Is there a fix for this?  From google it appears that others are experiencing the same problem.

can you try this please

<link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />

by: GordonukPosted on 2009-02-07 at 06:49:06ID: 23578422

Hi sunithnair - thanks for your suggestion.
However having changed my line to yours (ie leaving out the url) the problem is still the same.
whether I leave my other line in (as well) as:
<link rel="shortcut icon" type="image/x-icon" href="/favicon.ico" />-->
or take it out - currently as:
<!--<link rel="shortcut icon" type="image/x-icon" href="/favicon.ico" />-->
Have I done exactly what you suggested?

by: sunithnairPosted on 2009-02-07 at 06:52:27ID: 23578432

have you put it as
<link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />
or
<link rel="shortcut icon" type="image/x-icon" href="/favicon.ico" />

try the first option

by: GordonukPosted on 2009-02-07 at 11:55:50ID: 23579901

I tried the first option (<link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />)
then  in place of the two lines already there but it didn't work so I tried it with both options above.and it still didn't work.

Thaanks for trying to help .
I'll submit the question again and see if tnere is indeed a viable answer.

Hi Gordonuk,
I have IE8 and have a website with my favicon appearing.
One thing I noticed is that you have only a .ico file for your favicon.  For my site, I have a .ico file as well as a .gif file. It could be that .gif's are used for the favicon in IE8.

The code I used in my head section is below:

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico" type="image/vnd.microsoft.icon">
<link rel="icon" type="image/gif" href="favicon.gif">

I hope this helps

<link rel="SHORTCUT ICON" href="http://www.lenovo.com/favicon.ico" />

It works on my IE8? Have you fixed it?

Try deleting your cache and navigate to your web site.  IE won't "update" favicons on its own when they change.
