Windows Vista file search

Why is file searching in Vista such a nightmare?

I have indexing turned off because I usually am searching for hidden and system files rather than word docs and pictures, so I find indexing a waste of resources.

In Vista, I start a file search from the Start menu. It won't let me go to Advanced search without typing something and clicking the magnifying glass icon.

So I will type a phrase (*.pst for example). It doesn't matter if I click the magnifying glass or "Search Everywhere" that pops up. I have to wait for the search window to pop up, then click "Advanced Search" and then check the "Include non-indexed, hidden, and system files (might be slow)" check box. then I have to click the "Search" button again.

Now the fun begins. The grey progress bar starts creeping across the address bar as if it means anything. It gets to the end and according to the status bar, the search continues. Files start to appear in the list and the status bar says "searching...". Finally the status bar reports 12 items (or whatever) and appears to be done. However, then the entire list disappears and the grey bar starts creeping across from left to right again. The status bar no longer says "Searching", but it now says 1 item (or whatever) and I have to wait again. The grey bar reaches the end again, but it isn't done. As I sit and wait with no indication of any progress, files start slowly appearing in the list until eventually the status bar indicates 12 items again or 14 items or 10 items. Is it done? I don't know. Are these the same files that were in the list a minute ago? I don't know. If I wait longer will more files appear? Therein lies the problem.

Is there a way to set it to always search hidden and system files?
Is there a way to set it to always search Everywhere?
Is there a way to know when it is done?
Is there a way to have it not search twice (that's what it seems to be doing)?

Thanks,
