Unfortunately a reinstall of Vista did in fact turn out to be the only solution that worked.

Browse All TopicsI'm trying to install Adobe Creative Suite CS3 on Windows Vista (32 bit), and the entire suite installs correctly except for Dreamweaver CS3. After the install routine finishes, it shows that Dreamweaver failed to install. When I checked my event view, I found the following error:
"Product: Adobe Dreamweaver CS3 -- Error 1406.Could not write value to key \Software\Classes\phpfile.
I am installing as Admin, and I edited the registry permissions for HCU\Software\Classes to make sure that I had full access, but it just will not complete the install. I even added the user "Everyone" with full access to the root of HCU to no avail.
One thing to note is that it does create the key 'phpfile', but it remains empty. It appears that the installer creates the key but then can't write to it for some reason.
I've spent half the day on the phone with Adobe support, but they are utterly clueless. They just kept having me reinstall the program, each time with the same results. They did direct me to the MS Installer log file, and here is the portion that addresses my issue:
"Key: \Software\Classes\.php, Name: , Value:

I'm sure you feel better with a nice clean installation dwf73. It's good for the soul. :o)
I'm going to an Adobe seminar in Auckland tomorrow. It'll be interesting to hear what they have to say about this unbelievable mess.
I suggest that you invest a few dollars in Acronis True Image and save yourself a lot of trouble next time things go wrong. Wouldn't be wthout it.

I had to do a clean install of Vista on both my PCs before I could accomplish an error free installation of CS3.

This is a common problem which manifests itself differently in different circumstances.
In part, it depends upon what went before. What Adobe apps, particularly trial versions you've had.
The whole sad stroy with the ways people have got around it is on this post:
