I would figure that too but there si no "preferences" button or anything else that would hint towards that. It basically starts checking and then startd doing. Only option is to cancel which stops it. ugg.

Open a CS4 application
Help->Check for Updates
It will check for updates and once that screen comes up just click on preferences and uncheck the box that says automatically check for updates.
