Image and text overlay on Flash Video clip

I would like to display a series of images over an embedded video in flash file.
I would like to fade in pix1.jpg after the movie plays for a few seconds, display it for several seconds as the video continues, then fade out.
A few seconds later, I would like to fade in pix2.jpg, keep that onscreen for several seconds, and then fade out.
The same with the third and additional images. I trust instructions will be similar for text overlays.
I am a beginning Actionscript programmer; I know how to program images and text to display over the video clip, but I don't know how to fade them in and out for a set amount of time, or how to display them at differing intervals.
I am using Adobe Flash CS3 AS 3.0 (I can also use Flash 2004MX AS 2.0)
