Browse All TopicsEvery couple weeks i save an Excel spread sheet as a web page and then upload it Via Microsoft Expression Web 3. I have been doing this for about 3 years now and all has been good except now the Pictures will not load when viewing from the internet on Internet Explorer. It will show up just fine on FireFox or when i view it from Expression Web.
My process:
Save Excel spreadsheet as a "Webpage"
Use FileZilla and upload the image folder from when you covert excel to webpage
Go to Expression Web 3 and open my local site
Update link to the excel html file
Connect to my remote site Via Expression Web with FrontPageServerExtensions
Update the changed files Local To Remote
Now test webpage from internet
Everything is there except for the little pictures that was in my excel spreadsheet. They just show a red X by them.

Hello, sorry for the delay. I didnt think i was going to get any replies for awhile there. I will try and answer all the questions. Can i post my webpage so that you can see exactly???
What version of IE?
Internet Explorer 8
Have you tried this on other computers to see if they also have the same issue?
Yes its the same on all computers if you view with Internet Explorer (Also it shows fine in Expression Web when i do the "Preview From Browser" on IE8. Its just when i publish it to the web it does not show the pics.
ust to be clear the page does work in Firefox on the same computer?
Works with FireFox running any computer
Please look at the html for the page. Use View Source or Page Source to see it. Try to choose the most basic page. What type of image files are used?
GIF images
Can you type in the URL for one of those files in IE and see the image?
I right clicked the picture where the red x is and went to properties but it gives (Aug09L&F_files/sheet002.h
What if you make an html page manually that is similar (i.e. same html code to show the images and same images)? Does it work in IE?
No
What is the first part of the URL for that page? Can you provide us with the URL so we can also see the page and test it?
http://www.hospitalcoopera
If you scroll down with the main "Scroll" on the right you will see excel tabs at the bottom. Go to "Found Personal Prop Aug 2009".......This just started with my August upload. The other months show just fine.
The possibilities for something like this is usually bad html, missing files, or something blocking the images. Since the page seems to work in Firefox on the same computer the first two are unlikely. A general security/privacy program is also unlikely for the cause of the third but what IE addons do you have?
The issue could be related to some addon, toolbar, etc that is specific to IE. Have you made a change to that part of IE recently that could help narrow the culprit?
No changes to any of that. I would rule out this because it's the same for any computer.
Well hopefully that can get you going. Thanks again.
Thanks for the responses, especially the URL. I don't see any missing images when comparing the page in the browsers. Where exactly on the page is the image? Please describe it.
Is it part of the page in the iframe? If so can you view the page OK when looking at it outside the iframe (i.e. type the URL of the page in the iframe in your browser's address bar)?
Can you test this in IE7? In IE8 do you have the Compatibility option selected or even disabled? If you can provide a screenshot of your browser and this page then that may answer a few of these questions. EE does let you attach a file to a comment so it just depends on whether you can take the screenshot. Let me know if you have questions about doing that.
Let me know if you have a question about any of this or what you find out. Thanks again for the responses.

If you go to "Lost & Found" --> "Pueblo Lost & Found" --> August --> Down at the bottom of this page click on the "Found Personal Prop Aug 2009" and on this page 4 item down "Set of keys" is 1 picture on the far right. On the next tab on the bottom "Found Personal Prob Aut 2009" on the first item "scope" is supposed to be a picture as well. Both have red x's in them where the picture is supposed to go. I can view it though from FireFox.

The excel document that i converted to a web page is inside this iframe. I still cant see it outside of the iframe. http://www.hospitalcoopera

I have tried the compatibility button on IE8 but did nothing. I tried on IE6 as well but nothing. Both on different computers. I dont have an IE7 installed but could install it if needed. Every computer though i check it on doesnt work though unless its with Firefox. I will attach the screen shot of what i am looking at.
Thanks again.
Hello,
Well i got it :) I did 2 things and not sure which one that it was that fixed it.
1. When i save the excel document as a web page it makes the htm file and then a folder with the images, file list, code, etc....... Well in expression web when i go to publish it will not transfer the folder that goes along with the htm file. It isnt even visable. No idea why. So what i have to do and have been doing is uploading that folder with FileZilla. So what i just thought of and tried is I changed the "Transfer Type" to auto instead of ASCII.
2. In Excel 2007 i did the following.
Opened my Excel document
On the Tools menu, click Options.
Click the General tab, and then click Web Options.
Click the Browsers tab.
Under Options, Check the Rely on VML for displaying graphics in browsers check box, and then save your Web page again.
After i did both of the above it now works. I did at the same time though so i dont know which one was the culprit.
Would you guys mind if i split the points up between everyone? Everyone put me on the right track which was good..... Thanks again for the help.
The transfer type setting can make a difference with files like images, etc. The ASCII type can mess up files that need it to be sent using the BINARY type. It is good to use the "Auto" type since that will usually handle files correctly.
Did you remove the check for the option "Rely on VML for displaying graphics" or check the box? I could see that being the fix if you removed it (so VML was NOT used). As Kravimir mentioned it was the VML part and IE trying to use it that was the problem. I am glad he posted and helped with that.
I have no problem with a split but Kravimir was the one who really provided the final answer. I will be glad if you split for my part of the solution but will understand if you or Kravimir object. I am glad it is now working and the fix was in Excel. In the long run this will probably be better since you won't have to manually edit new files Excel makes. Excel and other MS Office stuff just aren't the best at making good html files.

I would think it best NOT checked since that was the reason for the problem. However I am not an expert on Excel's or MS' use of that when making HTML page (I really do try to avoid their "html" like the plague ;)) so I can't say for sure. It won't hurt to remove the check and see how it works. Undoing that change would be a way to find out what really fixed it. You at least know of the setting now and know it is part of the html made by MS (and something IE uses).
Actually if you decide to leave the setting then make sure you check your page in Firefox and other non-IE browsers. There is the change they may now have a problem if the "non VML" section is not made because of that setting change.

Let me know about all this or if you have a question about any part. Lots of questions but they are all important.
