Question

How do I remove FrontPage Server Extensions

Asked by: Murtop

Hi,

I am trying to upgrade from Windows XP to Vista Ultimate but the installation cannot be completed as the 'Upgrade' button is greyed out and Windows Installer displays an installation failure message saying that "FrontPage Server Extensions are installed". It recommends removing these prior to installing the upgrade.

How do I remove them from my PC (which is a single-user laptop used for home purposes and not used, or even connected to a server.

I have tried destroying the folder "Web Server Extensions" using various shredder and boot utility programmes but nothing seems to be able to remover this folder and I cannot find any way of removing Frontpage Server Extensions from my PC. Frontpage is installed as part of MSOffice 2000 but I have never used it. I don't have the original disc any longer due to three house moves since this was installed.

Help please.
Murtop.

Try this:
Go to Start - Set Program Access and Defaults - Choose Add / Remove Window Components.  Now choose Internet Information Services (IIS) and hit Details.  Here you can choose to remove FPSE.

Hi,

I can get as far as "Add/Remove Windows Components but there is no IIS in the drop-down list that appears, presumably because IIS is not installed with my version of WindowsXP.

What should I do now?

What is listed?

Did you also look in the Add / Remove Programs to see if FPSE are listed there?

Please see attached screen grab in MSWord showing what is listed in Add/Remove Windows Components.

There is no reference to FPSE in Add/Remove Programmes.

Also there is no reference to IIS within my "Administrative Tools" in the Control Panel

You might see if you can "remove" the Office 2000 to see if you have the ability to remove FPSE there.

I have since installed an upgrade to MSOffice 2007 and again have lost the original disc along the way of moving house (along with most of my other computer CD's!!).

If I uninstall MSOffice 2000 will the upgrade 'fall over' if the MSOffice 2000 installation is no longer 'sitting underneath' it?.

by: coreybryantPosted on 2008-12-18 at 09:01:57ID: 23205179

If you don't need MS Office 2000 / FP, you can uninstall those components.  There are probably some leftover 2000 components that were not in the 2007 installation (like Frontpage)

Won't I need the original MSOffice2000 disc to uninstall individual components?

If I select MSOffice 2000 from Add/Remove programs it will surely just uninstall all of the programme without the option to select only FrontPage?

>>Won't I need the original MSOffice2000 disc to uninstall individual components?
I don't think so, you might, try it.

>>If I select MSOffice 2000 from Add/Remove programs it will surely just uninstall all of the programme without the option to select only FrontPage?
Usually when you hit uninstall, you get an option to change, uninstall, or reinstall.  It seems you are not relying on any Office 2000 product since you have Office 2007 installed.  You might need to fix the 2007 installation, but usually not.

Well....I have now uninstalled MSOffice 2000 (using Add/Remove Programs method) and my MSOffice 2007 upgrade installation still works, so I've learned something new there.
This uninstalled MSFrontPage but left the MSFP Server Extensions behind on my system.
Consequently, Vista upgrade would still not install.
I then forcibly removed all dll's referring to MSFP and was left with an empty 'Web Server Extensions' folder in my 'C:/Program Files/Common Files/Microsoft Shared' sub-folder and, guess what....Vista upgrade still insists I have MSFP Extensions installed on my PC. But, oddly, Visual Studio 2008, which I use for web design work, will no longer connect to my hosting server for FTP purposes as it says "cannot run FTP as your system does not have FrontPage extensions installed". I'm now completely baffled and have abandoned the Vista upgrade.
I rebuilt my 'Web Server Extensions' folder using a back-up I made before starting this sorry process and Visual Studio now works again......

Thank you anyway for all your help.
Regards,
Murtop.
