I have an Windows 2003 IIS 6 Server with 2 vitual sites on it that require the Front Page Server extensions. I'm having a problems executing a Fron Page form. The error message is:
FrontPage Error.
User: please report details to this site's webmaster.
Webmaster: please see the server's application event log for more details.
The problem is not with the form, but with the FPSE. I cannot check the server expensions or recalulate the server extensions. I get prompted to login and the browser does not accept any credentials I enter. After a few times the browser returns a 401.1 "Unarthorized Access is denied due to invalid credentials"
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the FPSE many times without sucess. The version 5.0.2.6790.

Alright, so you extended the FPSE to http://www.example.com. Did you have the webmaster re-publish the website? Did this just start to happen or is this a new website? When you removed the FPSE from the website, did you remove the _vti_cnf folders (and then when you extended the website - have the webmaster re-publish the website)?
This is a new webserver with 2 front page sites. The websites were copied from the old server to this new box. Everything works on the old server.
The machinename, IIS config, frontpage config, local admin account name and password are the same or at least I thought so. Same OS and patch level.
_vti_cnf folders were removed when the FPSE were removed. I'll have to wait till later today before I have the websites republished. I'll update this request once this is complete.

I'm glad I asked if it was a new server - this is very important to know. When you move a FrontPage website to a new server, the FrontPage website cannot be copied over. It has to be published. The _vti_cnf folders that are created are basically for the server - copying them to a new webserver will cause problems.
Basically - you need to get the website set up on the new server - in IIS & through the FPSE admin control panel. And then, you need to publish the site via FrontPage to the new server - either through an IP / specific DNS entry, it does not matter. It just has to be published via FrontPage.
Right now, remove FPSE on the new server. Remove the _vti_cnf folders. Maybe even remove the files. Now extend the website to have FPSE. Then you should be ready to publish. If you don't do this, there will be more problems.
The above was followed explicitly however an error occurs when publishing via Front Page. The message is titled "Microsoft Office FrontPage". The content is:
The server could not complete your request. Contact your ISP or Web Server administrator to make sure that server has the FPSE or Sharepoint Services installed
The detail button displays additional information. The content is:
Error
The system cannot find the file specified.
FPSE to the site were removed and added back. Then did another publish. The above error reoccurs again.
I am not certain which scenario you did - unextended the FPSE, removed the _vti_cnf folders, extended the website, and then published or if you removed the website fully, added the website in IIS, extended the website, and then published?
There were two scenarios I gave - but assuming you did the first, I would recommend doing the second. FPSE are really irritating when it comes to this and even if you unextended the website & thought you removed everything, there are cases where something is missed.
I remember having to do that with one FP website when I was helping someone with the scenario you are providing. If you do a search for those _vti_cnf folders and then just delete those, sometimes that will not work. It is best to wipe the information from the server and start pretty much from scratch, especially when those pesky _vti_cnf folders were copied.
OK, I remember now - you said this is a new set-up. When you set up this new server - did you set up the default email settings & AdvAuthor permissions? Does this other FrontPage website have a form on it? Is the FrontPage form the only FrontPage webbot that is not working - I am guessing that you can publish to this website?

I removed the other Front page site from the server; so the site is the only front page site within IIS.

No; no forms work. Also can check or recalculate the FPSE from IIS.

No; when you publish from the Front Page client; the process run until it displays the error I listed above

The webmaster edits, and always has, pages on the production site on the fly. I copied the site, minus the front page directories, to a local drive where front page is installed. Extend the FPSE to the site and then try to publish from there.
Has the advanced author role been removed from the default installation?
Go into the Frontpage web interface and look under the frontpage site that was added. Click on "Manage Roles" and check to see which roles are in there. There should be the following:
-Administrator View, add, and change all server content; manage server settings and accounts.
-Advanced author View, add, and change pages, documents, themes, and borders; recalculate hyperlinks.
-Author View, add, and change pages and documents.
-Contributor View pages and documents
Once the rights have been configured properly, you need to go into the FPSE Admin Control Panel http://servername:port/fpa
Also, ensure that Windows Authentication and Basic Authentication is enabled (IIS - Properties - Directory Security Tab).
OK; this is resolved. There were multiple issues involved here.
The Cannot Check or Recalulate FPSE was solved by KB896861 Method 2 which is a registry edit to Disable the loopback check. Method 1, specify host names did not work.
The form problem was solved by clearing the properties of the form, modifying it in some manner and then publishing the results to the web.
The 2 problems were not related to one another.

When you say you uninstalled / reinstalled FPSE, did you go into the Windows control panel & remove the FPSE or did you go into the FPSE admin control panel & remove the FPSE and then attempt to add FPSE to the site?
Since you said you get an error, I have to assume you actually removed the FPSE program, which could be the cause of the problem.
