Question

Frontpage 2003 Template not working

Asked by: DWithrow

I've inherited a FrontPage 2003 website.  It has a registration page that uses a template(s).

I've never used templates so I'm at a bit of a loss.  The registration page worked at one time so I'm reasonably sure the web server has FrontPage extensions installed.

I made a simple text change to the page and it broke.  I didn't have the templates at that time, but I do now.  I republished it, but no joy.  When the form is submitted you get:

You have submitted a form or followed a link to a page that requires a web server and
the FrontPage Server Extensions to function properly. ETC.

Can anyone help?

Thanks...
Don

You need to publish your site to a web server which has server extensions installed.  Is the site running locally on your PC?

by: DWithrowPosted on 2009-08-06 at 11:45:59ID: 25036715

joeypolice,

The server IS running FrontPage extensions.  As I mentioned, the page worked before I edited and republished it without having the template.

No, the site is not local.  It's hosted at an ISP.

Any other thoughts?

Don

Don,

A couple of things come to mind.

1.  you might need to reinstall the FP extensions.
2.  Try creating a new blank page with a template, and publishing it.  If it works, then you might have to re-create the page by copy and paste.

Send me the link, and I will be happy to look at it for you.

joeypolice,

The page is at http://www.nonprofitrisk.org/training/conference/reg1_safe.html.

When you click on Go to Step 2, you get the error message.

Thanks...

Yes, it looks as if you need to reset the FP extensions on the server.  If you contact them, they should be able to do it for you.  Your form looks good, and the extensions seem to be working.   Have you tried creating a basic form with one field and then testing it on the server?

by: joeypolicePosted on 2009-08-06 at 12:12:09ID: 25037015

Also, did you know your form is an HTML page?  Make sure you don't need to rename it to .asp.  That might be the problem too.

by: DWithrowPosted on 2009-08-06 at 12:36:43ID: 25037274

joeypolice,

I'm sure it doesn't need to be a .asp page.  There's no VBScript and the page has been working as is for a while.

I'll see if I can get the ISP to reset the extensions.

Thanks...
Don

If the form is going to a database, then it must be a .asp.  If it just submitting results via email, or text file then you are correct that it is okay to be an HTML.

joeypolice:

I verified with the ISP that FrontPage extensions were installed.  No Joy.  Then I had it uninstalled and reinstalled.  Still No Joy.

Any more thoughts?

Thanks...

What you need to do is test the form controls on a new page.  This will test if they are working.

If you email me, I will be happy to check this for you and see what is wrong.

joeypolice,

The page is at http://nonprofitrisk.org/training/conference/reg1_safe.html.  I've republished it with no joy.

Is there something about the location of the templates?

Thanks...
Don

by: joeypolicePosted on 2009-08-11 at 06:32:45ID: 25068806

No, you can't republish it.  You have to create a NEW form in Frotnpage and test that.

Just create a basic form with one field and submit button.  See if it works.

joeypolice,

As I indicated in my original post, I know nothing of using FrontPage templates.  So, I am at a loss even to attempt your tests.  Bottom line, I have no idea where to begin.

So, I could use your (or some other FrontPage expert) help.

May I suggest that I bump this questions point value to 500 and accept your solution to give you credit and then we can continue this off line and, if you're willing, discuss payment for your services.

Please contact me at don.withrow@dwcllcsolutions.com so we can pursue this.

Thanks...
