Question

Adobe, Director Projector Performance

Asked by: polshek

I have been having repeated trobules with Director projector presentations playback speed, it seems to run smooth at times and slow/jerky at other times.  One case in particular infolves the playback of a film loop created in director by animating a series of 100 frame JPG images, and there are no transparency overlays and no scaling.  There are no other actions occuring at the same time as playback. The playback from the projector file is very inconsistant ie. it seems that the rate of playback of the frames changes.  Is there anything software related I can do about this? Or just suggestions on how I can get a more consistant playback speed?

The machine Im playing it back on is new and has adequate (i think) RAM and processor speed to be playing back these applications.

There are a number of things that could be causing the issue. I would first look at the file size of each JPG file. What is the width and height of the images being displayed? What bit depth and quality are they? What is the playback speed of the Director movie?

Also, do you have any code that is being executed while the filmLoop is playing? Any timeOut objects or cyclical frame scripts?

no code is being executed while the film loops are playing. although there are images fading in/out prior to and following the film loop. . . . .and I belive the  JPEGs are sized so they fit 1:1 on the screen (no scaling I belive they are 760x660px, RGB and 8 bits/channel each are about 35kb), . . and the projector movie size is 1024x768 at the standard (preset frame rate playback)

It seems pretty straightforward which is why Im so perplexed.

Let me know if you have any thoughts.

Have you tried preloading any of them so that they are already buffered in RAM?  What frame rate are you playing at?

A much better way to achieve smooth playback performance than using a film loop would be to create the animation in Flash and import the .swf file into Director.
This can be done by either importing all of your jpegs into Flash, arranging them a frame at a time on the timeline, and exporting as a .swf file, or a much quicker method would be to create an uncompressed .avi file, and import this into Flash.
I did this a couple of weeks ago with a 160 frame 190 meg .avi which Flash compressed down to less than 1 meg, and the resulting .swf played perfectly in Director.
