Question

Layers on Template not appearing on updated linked Pages

Asked by: lilybella

I have a plain HTML DreamweaverMX template that I have created using layers. The final layer I created will not appear on the linked pages when I look at it on the live site (or the test site for that matter) no matter how hard I try. Other changes I make such as textual changes appear but nothing that is on this layer. The layer in question contains text only (five words in fact). I do not have prevent overlaps turned on.

I have tried recreating it, moving it, reapplying templates to the pages but to no avail.

This has happened to me twice now. The last time I recreated the template from scratch and redid all pages as Macromedia Tech Support could not help me. I do not want to do that again.

I am using DreamweaverMX 6.01 on a G4 Mac running OS 10.2.6.

hello lilybella,

did u check the z-index of the layer, it should be higher to be over other layers.
if the templates looks fine, but the applied pages doesn't respond, make sure that u run the update all pages command.

paste the template code here, so that i can c it a figure out where the error come from.

Why are you using layers?

Unless you know exactly how they work and what affects them, layers are NOT a good idea.

I suspect you could do what you want with tables, which wouldn't have any of the problems that layers create.

Thank you for everyone's comments. I am the first to admit that I am no expert on DW. Or web pages for that matter. I am using layers because from my limited knowledge when I started this project it seemed the best solution. What I am trying to do is a very basic, plain html  template that has a header, a side navigation menu and an editable area of body copy. No flash, rollovers, asp or anything that requires users to download anything.

Interesting to note, NEW pages created from the template work ok. It seemed to stop working on the old pages about a week ago.
I can recreate the template using tables an redo all the text (all 72 pages of it) but would rather not if I can avoid it at all.

the url is http://www.quickcut.com.au/aus/supportnew/index.html

the link to a new page that shows what it is mean to look like is;
http://www.quickcut.com.au/aus/supportnew/downloads/PageStore2.4c21.html

All pages are linked to the same template.

There is probably some really easy solution...

By the way, when I do try to save the changes to a "new" page created from the template I get an error "changes cannot be saved as they are locked by a template or translator..."  (or words to that effect) and then it saves it anyway.

Another thing, with the above error I am not trying to change content that is in an uneditable region - at least not as far as I can see.

Oops. Another thing. I have checked th z-index and all is correct.

hello lilybella,
i guess that the problem now is whith old html pages that u wana apply the existing template to it.
here is how it goes:

oopen the existing html page, choose modigy->template->apply template to page.
Insonsistent region names dialoug appears.

u should move the contents to the approperiate editable regions.
if ur page contains layers u should choose:

Name                                                              Resolved
Document Body                                    ur editable region in template
Document Head                                    head

the document head appears because DW adds a function to ur head when u insert any layer into ur page.
if it didn't work, then the code contains something wrong, u will have to post the code here to figure out the code error.

concerning the last error, is the template read only? do u use anti virus program or something?

hope this helps,
kanary
