Question

Dreamweavers Fatal Errors

Asked by: bradderick

Hi All,

After having used dreamweaver mx for about three months now I am finding that more and more on the larger pages of 400+ lines there are errors encountered. I am using Dreamweaver MX, updated to 6.1 on Windows XP Home on one box and Windows XP Pro on another.

Things like,

After having created a page entirely in design or code view (usually mostly code as it is running on coldfusion mx) then for no apparent reason, dreamweaver will move the code over 4-5 cms on the page in one huge column (if you think you have the answer to that one I'm going to post the code on the page to see if we can work out where we have gone wrong as a follow up to this question - will give link below).

Also, we probably have around 100+ pages and files in the cache for the site and now anytime we try to delete or rename a file using dreamweaver it just starts counting up the cache and then crashes to desktop.

Sometimes when you've been editing in code view and changing table cells around etc and then switch back to design view it will just randomly crash to desktop. Often it does this when creating borders using long single pixel cells (with a single pixel image obviously).

We seem to be getting errors at about once every two hours, most of them fatal.

Is this something which is widespread with dreamweaver? This dreamweaver was purchased legitimately and since the purchase date i've only installed the one patch.

I'm trying to work out if other people have these problems or if it has something to do with my setup, ie some sort of hardware corruption (although the hardware is new).

I will award the points to the best answer(s).

Thanks for reading the Q!

Brad

hello again

where is the 400 lines u r talking about.
plzz post the page which contains the errors, i can help u

the problem of crashing may be due these many many errors.  or software need to be re-installed.

by: bradderickPosted on 2003-07-30 at 04:24:27ID: 9035365

You should be able to find them by following the links at:

http://www.experts-exchange.com/Web/WebDevSoftware/ColdFusion/Q_20694572.html

I just updated the question to reflect the new clientsource code of the two pages.

The errors are not related to just this page. They seem to be dreamweaver wide, I did just re-install my dreamweaver, and have yet to see any errors, so we can hope that this was the problem!

by: kanaryPosted on 2003-07-30 at 04:28:56ID: 9035385

why r u insisting to post the same url every time

look: this page: http://members.optusnet.com.au/~sallay/myclassifieds.txt
this page has no errors at all as i can c.
all links in this page directs to an error page

so where's the problem ?

by: kanaryPosted on 2003-07-30 at 04:34:39ID: 9035416

plzz specify ur problem clearly now to help u with it

by: bradderickPosted on 2003-07-30 at 04:35:07ID: 9035419

I added an update to that question with a request for the clientside code.

I'll repost the same two links here to show you the difference:

http://members.optusnet.com.au/~sallay/clientcodewithcolumnerror.txt

http://members.optusnet.com.au/~sallay/clientcodewithouterror.txt

Hopefully this will show you the difference between the two and the problem I am having is with the big blank column on the left hand side appearing in the one which returns no records.

If you would like any more clarification please don't hesitate to ask.

Cheers,
Brad

I am trying to determine what is the exact cause of the large blank column in the demo that returns no records.

Brad

by: bradderickPosted on 2003-07-30 at 04:42:28ID: 9035445

So, on one of the pages (where no records are being returned) you get that big blank (white) column on the left hand side.

When there are records being returned the column is absent, which is the way it was designed in the first place. I am trying to determine which piece of code is responsible for that big column so I can get rid of it as when i preview it in dreamweaver it is not there.

Cheers,
Brad

thanks very much, i'm hugely appreciative!!

Could you post any ideas you have to the other thread as this one is (mainly) about general errors that dreamweaver is having and it might help other people as well in the other thread.

Cheers!

Thanks for that Kanary, it looks good in dreamweaver but I really need to know where abouts exactly on the page is the particular tag that is causing that column, the reason is that once i know exactly which tag is causing the problem i have to then work out from there which piece of code in the original page is responsible for creating that column so i can get rid of it.

Reason behind that is that most of the page is generated dynamically, like all the rows etc so if I know which tag is responsible in the client side code i can then change my server side code.

Cheers,
Brad

Hi kanary,

sorry bout the wait, i had some problems accessing experts-exchange yesterday.

Crazee managed to solve it for us in the other thread. However, you did suggest re-installing dreamweaver which did help my error rates somewhat but I would rather leave this question open to see if I can get any other input from people that may have been having more of the errors that I listed in the question.

For your time with the other thread, please look here for some points:

BTW if anyone is interested in the actual answer to the original question it is the following, taken from the support forums at macromedia.

If you are using layout view in dreamweaver to create anything more than the most absolute basic site then you shouldn't be!!!

It (apparently) writes code that is bloated and commits hari-kari when trying to make changes to it.

I found that the solution was to learn to design properly in standard view.

Have a look at the following excellent tutorial which will definitely help you on your way if you are in the same predicament that I was:

Cheers to all,
Brad
