Question

Finding which pages images are linked to

Asked by: freespirit

Hi

Sometimes in the design process images in one's image directory are either no longer used or need to be removed if a decision is made to use a different image instead. When the directory contains a large number of images it is diffifcult to weed out the ones which need to be cleaned out.

Is there any way to easily find which images are linked to pages and if so, which ones? In FrontPage there was a hyperlink view which visually displayed the links from any single image to other pages or URLS. Not sure if anything similar available for Dreamweaver MX.

Thanks in advance

Michelle

You can check links for the site and specify that you want to report Orphaned Files.

To check links in the entire site:
1. In the Site panel, choose a site from the Current Sites pop-up menu.
2. Choose Site > Check Links Sitewide.
The report appears in the Link Checker panel (in the Results panel group).
3. In the Link Checker panel, select a specific link report from the Show pop-up menu to view another report.
Your report choices are Broken Links, External Links, and Orphaned Files.
4. A list of files that fit the report type you selected appears in the Link Checker dialog box.
Note: If you select Orphaned Files as your report type, you can delete orphaned files from the Link Checker panel directly by selecting a file from the list and pressing the Delete key.
A list of files that fit the report type you selected appears in the Link Checker panel.
5. To save a report, click the Save Report button in the Link Checker panel.

For more info, launch Dreamweaver, then hit F1 to open 'Using Dreamweaver MX'.  Under the Index tab, type 'orphaned files'.

Thanks. I do use the f1 help, but at times, if you don't know the key phrase (in this case "orphaned files") to look up, there is no starting place. I appreciate the help but the only thing I notice is that it also lists along with orphaned files, other files which do not exist anymore. I also saw many which were not in the current site at all, but had been opened while working in the site at some point. Is this usually how it results?

<< if you don't know the key phrase (in this case "orphaned files") to look up, there is no starting place >>
Very true, makes it hard to find what you're looking for sometimes.

The other files you found were presumably associated with the site at one point (ie. because they were were opened while working in the site), and so are listed here.  Are they also listed as orphans?  I guess this would make sense since they're not linked to anymore.

by: freespiritPosted on 2004-09-30 at 07:46:42ID: 12190522

Yes they are listed as orphans as well as other files long since deleted.

So this feature definitely helps but seems to too efficient! :) since listing those other files in with it somewhat defeats the purpose though not altogether. It then still demands you sift through them anyway. The benefit is that you are sifting through hopefully less than the entire pool of files, and also through files you know are somehow not linked to anything else. So it does help just not as effectively as it did in FrontPage which also gave a graphic view of incoming and outgoing links to files. Thus even if it was not orphaned but had links to some old or unecessary page you got a visual picture of it and immediately could make the right decisions.

Thanks though, you answered my "how to " question. Appreciate it.

Yes, seems it's not as effective as it could be.  Glad to help out, though.  Good luck.
