Question

FTP error occurred - cannot put index.html. Access denied. The file may not exist, or there could be a permission problem.

Asked by: AllHale

I'm using Dreamweaver to create my website but am having problems uploading the files that I change. For example, when I update my index.html page, located away from the other files, it does a brief attempt at updating it and then says: An FTP error occurred - cannot put index.html. Access denied. The file may not exist, or there could be a permission problem." And also, nothing within the server will change after I renamed the files.

The file (index.html) does exist because the website is working (FrontierAids.com). I would appreciate any assistance you could give me but please keep in mind I am new to Dreamweaver and to the website creation process so I don't know much of anything. Thank you for your time.

First thing I would try is to open your files panel, (double view) and drag and drop the file you are attempting to replace.  See if it is simply a path problem.
If that doesnt work, it may be a true permission problem with the server or IIS.
Can you get files?
Can you delete files on the server?
what files or folders can you not place local files into?

Good luck

No I can't get files. When I put it in double view, nothing is on the left side under the remote site column. All I have is a folder and //. But the " An FTP error occurred - cannot put index.html. Access denied. The file may not exist, or there could be a permission problem," now appears for all files I only thought it was the index.html because that is what I am working on. This message occurs when I attempt to save changes to a page that I was working on within Dreamweaver. I know that it attempts to add to the server because it was working before and added the original files present there, but won't add any new alterations that I make now. All this has taken place in the last week or so.

I can also delete files from the server but it won't update any of the files currently on the server that I alter in Dreamweaver. Or allow me to add new files to the server. My remote site folder is called //.  I think there may be an inability for it to alter the files in the server, or no connection to it at all (I know, obviously). But I don't know how to fix this.

Should I just start over from scratch or is there a way to fix this? Could it be the server provider? What does it mean by permission problem? Do I need to adjust settings or something? Please let me know.

What version of Dreamweaver are you using?

--------
1) If you CAN see the files when you go into dual-pane view, then the problem may be a CHMOD permissions problem. Right-click on an html file and see if "Set Permissions" appears in the context menu. If so, set the permissions to 644. If not, go to the macromedia exhange here:
http://www.macromedia.com/cfusion/exchange/index.cfm#view=sn106&viewName=Exchange%20Search%20Details&loc=en_us&authorid=13654190&page=0&scrollPos=0&subcatid=0&snid=sn106&itemnumber=0&extid=1013102&catid=0
And install the "Set Permissions" extension. (This is the version for MX2004--if you have one earlier, run a quick search, because there is also one for earlier versions of Dreamweaver.)
--------
2) If you can NOT see any files from dual-pane view (which is what seemed to be the case from what you said):

In your Site Definition for this site (reached from the main menu by going to Site > Manage Sites, or by picking "Manage Sites" from the dropdown menu in the "Files" palette -- and then clicking the "Edit" button for the site in question), under "Remote Info," there is probably some inaccurate information entered. Make sure that it is correctly configured. If the website is being hosted by a web host, you will need to pick "FTP" for Access, and try either "frontieraids.com" or "ftp.frontieraids.com" as the FTP host. The Login and Password should be the root-level login and password that you were given when you set up the domain with your host; generally it's the same one you use to log in to whatever online control panel you were given.

If you enter all of this and hit the "Test" button and it SUCCESSFULLY connects to the server, then the problem is probably that the "Host directory" is set incorrectly. Many web hosts put the HTML files for your site in a subdirectory such as "/www/" or "/public_html/" and if you don't enter this Dreamweaver will be trying to connect to the wrong folder. How do you know what to enter for this value? Empty the field completely and then hit the "Connect" button in dual-pane FTP view, and see what the subfolders are on the remote site. Open them up and check out their contents--one should contain your HTML files. If that folder is, for example, "/www/html/" then enter THAT as the "Host directory" and now the remote and local sites should be on the same page, so to speak.

So the question is, when you hit the "Test" button, does it connect successfully? If NOT then the problem is just that your login is wrong. Ask your ISP if you can't figure out the correct login name and password to connect to your FTP site. Try using the login information for your primary frontieraids.com email account. Keep in mind that with some hosts you will NOT use "frontieraids.com" as the "FTP host" but actually log in to THEIR ftp server with a username and password they give you.

Tell me what happens with that Test button and I can help more.
