The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

search by town name (UK) webservice

Hi,

I am trying to get my head around implementing a placename search i.e. rightmove.co.uk where a user types in a uk town name and within X miles and it queries my properties database that includes longitude and latitude for each property. (ASP.NET VB script, dreamweaver 8)

I have found the geonames websevice which appears to be exactly what i am after:

http://ws.geonames.org/postalCodeSearch?placename=exeter

This returns me the long and lat of the chosen town/place. It is a REST webservice so not sure how to use this.

I require a search page with a text box to enter the placename, a summary page to confirm location, select price range and choose radius in miles and then finally a results page to display thr properties in my databse that meet these requirements.

In theory I should then be able to do an SQL query to display to just show properties within a bounding box - looking through these forums i found this bit of code:

strSql="Select * from PostCode where (LONGITUDE  between " & (long1 + 0.5) & " and " & (long1 - 0.5) & ") AND (LATITUDE between " & (lat1 + 0.5) & " and " & (lat1 - 0.5) & " ) "

I guess this puts a box around the required long lat.

Has anyone succesfully done this here? as I am quite new to this and don't really know where to start.

Property table inlcudes , id, name, postcode, long, lat, price, agent

If someone could help with laying out the code etc I would be really grateful as it is driving me nuts!, As much info as poss would be a great help. thanks in advance
