Zones: Macromedia Dreamweaver, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)

I am having trouble removing the whitespace under my header and between the left sidebar in IE 6 or 7(all pages.)  I started with a CSS layout and pasted a table into the header. There is a background image on the body div container and in the sidebar div. I used paragraph returns to lengthen the sidebar. I am using a single background image in the footer and wonder if that is causing the footer text to crop out and not display correctly on IE 6 or 7. Firefox and Safari seem fine.

I am new to web design and this is my first site. I am trying to use CSS layouts and stylesheets. This newb would appreciate your ideas on more efficient ways to construct pages.
