Question

Dreamweaver CS4 "Create Web Photo Album" Problems

Asked by: nsitedesigns

I have used this before to create photo albums for websites but for some reason I keep getting an error.  In DW when I finish the dialog box to set up cart I get a message the opens up in Photoshop.  The message says Could not complete request because PS doesn't recognize that type of file.  I don't understand where the problem is.  All images are saved as .jpg files.  Please advise.

Is this command coming from Photoshop or Dreamweaver?

by: IanThPosted on 2009-06-29 at 14:15:30ID: 24740308

its beacause dw cs4 can use photoshop to edit jpg files ie all the cs4 apps are linked
does the jpg open in photoshop

by: nsitedesignsPosted on 2009-07-02 at 04:34:25ID: 24762150

In response to Jason 1178,
I saved the images in Photoshop and put them in a folder.  Then in Dreamweaver,  I clicked the Commands/Create Web  Photo Album.  During this process, you id the folder that has the images and DW does the rest, ie resizing thumbnails, etc.

In response to IanTh,
I am not editing the PS files in DW. I am trying to use the application in DW to create a photo album but it isn't working.  Yes, the images open in PS.  That is where I saved them all.

by: IanThPosted on 2009-07-02 at 04:37:11ID: 24762169

so the problem must be in dw not photoshop

have you tried reinstalling it

by: nsitedesignsPosted on 2009-07-02 at 08:26:42ID: 24764428

Reinstalling will be my last choice of action.  Any other ideas?

by: IanThPosted on 2009-07-02 at 09:28:45ID: 24765057

do a repair then through control panel add and remove programs or programs and features in vista as its obviously a problem with a backend function thats called when dw uses ps code
I have the same installed and I don't get the same result so its something wrong in dw and the repair will fix any missing or corrupt files

by: jason1178Posted on 2009-07-02 at 10:21:42ID: 24765510

IanTh,

You're off base with this.  Reinstalling or repairing is not indicated when a dynamic behavior fails to work as expected.  While it might fix the issue if the app is corrupt, there could be other issues in play that a reinstall/repair wouldn't address.  Better to start slow before going thermonuclear on what we assume is an otherwise good installation of the program...

Generally speaking, you want to ask a user to reinstall DW when the program crashes on adding a behavior or fails to load or throws the same error up repeatedly whenever a mouse or keyboard action is made.  Those all indicate corruption at some level and the troubleshooting steps are:

1) Disable all extensions
2) Delete WinFileCache-XXXXXXX.dat from the user configuration folder
3) Delete the User's configuration folder and let DW recreate it
4) Go thermonuclear

Follow each step and test extensively at the end of each one.

----------------------------------------------------------

nsitedesigns,

I will need to test this from home tonight (My office machine still has CS3 only) but please check the following:

1) Are all images "good" jpgs (will they open in another application)?
2) Is Photoshop the default program for jpgs in both Windows and in DW (Edit | Preferences | FileTypes / Editors)?

How do I "do a repair through control panel"

by: jason1178Posted on 2009-07-02 at 10:23:25ID: 24765531

nsitedesigns,

Disregard that advice for now.  I'm pretty sure we can fix this without dealing with the OS functions.

by: nsitedesignsPosted on 2009-07-02 at 10:30:48ID: 24765600

do you also recommend a full reinstall?

by: jason1178Posted on 2009-07-02 at 10:33:46ID: 24765630

No, read upwards to see my questions to you (under my comments to IanTh).  You may end up doing a reinstall but there are other issues that need to be ruled out so we should explore those first.

One more question,

Is Fireworks installed and available?

by: nsitedesignsPosted on 2009-07-02 at 10:39:13ID: 24765696

It is installed but I am not familiar with it as much as PS.

I dumped the plists for both PS and DW but that didn't seem to help.

by: jason1178Posted on 2009-07-02 at 10:45:57ID: 24765761

>> I dumped the plists for both PS and DW but that didn't seem to help.

What does "dump the plists" mean?

>> Is Fireworks installed and available?
>>> It is installed but I am not familiar with it as much as PS.

Okay.  How are jpgs being handled from the OS and from within DW? (http:#a24765510)

by: nsitedesignsPosted on 2009-07-02 at 10:51:41ID: 24765808

Dump plist is a common way of saying that I went to the system library and deleted the preference settings.  This is often done when the software isn't working right.

Jpgs are normally handled in DW via PS.

by: jason1178Posted on 2009-07-02 at 10:53:16ID: 24765826

What OS is this?

>> Jpgs are normally handled in DW via PS.

Okay, switch that to Fireworks in DW, close DW, reopen DW and reissue the Create Web Album command...

OS X 10.4.11

by: jason1178Posted on 2009-07-02 at 10:58:22ID: 24765883

>> OS X 10.4.11

Ian, you're now really off-base :)

nsitedesigns,

We both assumed a Windows setup and that's where the control panel and repair stuff comes from.  Please try the Fireworks solution and post back the results.

by: nsitedesignsPosted on 2009-07-02 at 11:01:21ID: 24765920

Umm, not sure what the "fireworks" solution is?  Fireworks is a software program that is installed on my machine.  The create web album command is run on DW.  Does FW have an album option?

Also, is Bridge installed and available?

by: jason1178Posted on 2009-07-02 at 12:13:24ID: 24766634

>> got it to finally work substituting FW for PS.

Okay, the reason this works is because the internal command uses Fireworks to process the images.

So if you agree that my advice solved the problem, why does this get a B grade and not an A?

by: nsitedesignsPosted on 2009-07-02 at 12:25:35ID: 24766906

Every time I used this program I used PS to process the images, not FW.  You are correct.  I will raise your grade to A.

by: jason1178Posted on 2009-07-02 at 12:27:09ID: 24766920

Thank you, I appreciate that.  The grades speak to the technical accuracy of the answer and thus our reputations.  That's why Experts get twitchy over them.
