Question

Site Definition Problem in DreamWeaver

Asked by: andreyman3d2k

Very strange problem:

I am trying to set up a site in DreamWeaver. In order to utilize the WAMP environment, I am trying to place the root folder in the www folder in my WAMP folder.
C:\WAMP\www\mysite

I make the site, but here is the weird part:

The mysite folder DOESN'T SHOW UP in C:\WAMP\www  !!
DreamWeaver claims it's there, and in fact, IT SEES ANOTHER FOLDER THAT I CREATED THERE MANUALLY, but when I go to C:\WAMP\www there is only the folder I created manually, but the one DW made isn't there.

I have it set so that hidden folders display (although it should not be hidden).

This problem is also preventing me from testing the page. When I go to test it claims that the page is not found. If I place a file manually into a folder in C:\WAMP\www, it works fine.

Any possible explanation for this?! Many thanks in advance for any help!

Andrey,

How are the three parts of the site definition set?

Local Site = ?

Remote Site = ?

Testing Server = ?

by: v2MediaPosted on 2009-09-08 at 22:07:34ID: 25288368

Right click the www folder, select properties, and go to the security tab. The list of permissions for www will most likely be the default permissions for all child objects. Make sure you're listed, or a security template that you're a member of. If not, add yourself and click advanced, "replace permission entries on all child objects..." and be sure Inherit permissions is checked as well.

v2,

We've got to stop posting simultaneously  :)

Jason:

Local Root Folder:   C:\wamp\www\MySite\
Http Address: Http://

Remote access: none

Testing server:

Model: PHP/MySQL
Access: Local/Network
Testing server Folder:  C:\wamp\www\MySite\
URL Prefix: http://localhost/

V2:

When I go to the properties on the www folder, there is no security tab. But read-only does have a green box in it. When I cleared it closed properties and went back in, the green box was there again. Don't know if that is relevant. I clicked on Advanced in the general tab, but there was nothing there about security -- just indexing & compress/encrypt.

Just for clarification -- I DO need to put my site into this www folder in order to have PHP work, right? (I got that from some tutorial)

by: andreyman3d2kPosted on 2009-09-09 at 05:54:14ID: 25290649

Again, what completely befuddles me is that when I try to create another site in DW, and I go to browse for location and go to C:\wamp\www, the MySite folder and other attempted folders made in DW appear to be there, as well as the folders I manually placed there outside of DW. But when I go to the folder via explorer -- none of the folders DW made are there...

by: v2MediaPosted on 2009-09-09 at 06:06:25ID: 25290786

It seems to be a funky permissions issue to me. If DW can show the folders when defining a site, but explorer hides them, it's either the folders' view permissions, or an explorer view refresh is required.

There's an explorer folder view option to automatically refresh when the contents change somewhere... not advised on a busy network drive though. Does hitting f5 in explorer show the folders?

by: andreyman3d2kPosted on 2009-09-09 at 06:10:38ID: 25290822

No, I tried refreshing 1000 times - nada. It's bizzare. Another thing I discovered just now -- when I right-click on the folder in DW and go to 'Explore' it gives me the message that the location is unavailable, and I should check to make sure that the disc is properly intalled, etc..

by: andreyman3d2kPosted on 2009-09-09 at 07:03:18ID: 25291378

More strangeness:

In explorer I made a folder in C:\wamp\www, and used DW to define a new site in that folder.

When I create a new file IN EXPLORER in that folder called test.php, it shows up in DW under the main folder. However, when I create test1.php in DW and place it right under the test.php file, it DOES NOT SHOW UP IN THE FOLDER IN EXPLORER!

Andrey,

Those setting should be fine.  Just for kicks and giggles, try uninstalling WAMPP and replacing it with XAMPP.  I've seen oddball things happen with WAMPP and it's an older branch of the dev tree.

by: andreyman3d2kPosted on 2009-09-09 at 10:30:07ID: 25293588

Okay I did this - installed XAMPP that is. 2 problems -

1. MySQL is not cooperating. In the XAMPP control it says MySQL is running, but when I press admin it open to a page that says:

MySQL said:

#1045 - Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)

I already had MySQL installed on my computer prior to this install. Is it possible that it's there twice? if so, what should I do? I don't have any DBs yet, so I don't care about losing any data, but I do wantit to work.

2. I am not sure what to do with it... is there a particular place where I should store all of my root folders for websites, etc...?

by: jason1178Posted on 2009-09-09 at 11:42:14ID: 25294265

>> Okay I did this - installed XAMPP that is

Did it resolve the issue with being able to see files?

>> Is it possible that it's there twice?

Yup.  Remove XAMPP and remove the other MySQL instance.  Then reinstall XAMPP and try to use MySQL again.

>> I am not sure what to do with it... is there a particular place where I should store all of my root folders for
>> websites, etc...?

It's the same as WAMPP in that sense.  You should have an XAMPP folder on the C:\ drive and in there will be a public web root (C:\xampp\htdocs by default).  All Dreamweaver settings for paths should point there.

by: andreyman3d2kPosted on 2009-09-09 at 11:49:21ID: 25294325

Okay, I will try. I think I read somewhere that removing MySQL does not remove the username/password, and this has to be done manually?

by: jason1178Posted on 2009-09-09 at 12:01:15ID: 25294434

>> I think I read somewhere that removing MySQL does not remove the username/password

It should...if you can find where you read that and send it to me, I can evaluate it.

by: andreyman3d2kPosted on 2009-09-09 at 12:12:28ID: 25294522

Okay, I did everything, and everything was working wonderfully. Then I went to users in phpMyAdmin saw that there was no password, and set a password. Now I am getting the same error everywhere I go:

MySQL said:

#1045 - Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)

Sorry for being such a twit. What is to be done?

by: jason1178Posted on 2009-09-09 at 12:22:26ID: 25294628

>> (using password: NO)

Well, you now need to use a password :)

Go to:

C:\xampp\phpMyAdmin

and edit the file config.inc.php.  On or about line 21, you should see

$cfg['Servers'][$i]['password']             = '';

and just add the password you set between the '' marks

by: jason1178Posted on 2009-09-09 at 12:23:45ID: 25294636

By the way, since this is all local to your computer, it's okay to run without a password.  If someone has control over the physical local machine, you have a much larger set of problems than whether or not your test data on mysql is secure.

For the live site, you will want a very strong password.

by: andreyman3d2kPosted on 2009-09-09 at 12:23:59ID: 25294642

Did it. Same error.

by: andreyman3d2kPosted on 2009-09-09 at 12:29:49ID: 25294703

wait, no. Now works. Weird... stopped service, restarted... didnt work. 2 min later worked.

Okay now going to try to see if DreamWeaver will be appeased.

by: andreyman3d2kPosted on 2009-09-09 at 12:38:21ID: 25294773

Ah. Same problem as before, with WAMP. Nothing DreamWeaver does is reflected in the folder in windows, however windows actions (creation of folders/files) are visible in DW. Testing pages in DW fails.

Can't conceive how it's possible!

by: andreyman3d2kPosted on 2009-09-09 at 12:41:32ID: 25294802

It's as if DW does not have permission to do anything in that folder, but does not know it, and thinks that whatever it is doing is actually happening. DreamWeaver is stuck in the Matrix. Any ideas?

by: jason1178Posted on 2009-09-09 at 12:51:41ID: 25294889

What OS is this and what security software is running?

by: andreyman3d2kPosted on 2009-09-09 at 12:57:07ID: 25294946

Windows XP SP3

I have a MacAfee Firewall...
That's all I am aware of.

by: jason1178Posted on 2009-09-09 at 12:59:53ID: 25294974

Try this.

Create a new folder under My Documents for this site.  Redefine the local site tab to use that folder.  Keep the remote and testing server settings the same (C:\xampp\htdocs I assume) and see if you can put files and preview files with the Apache and MySQL services running.

by: jason1178Posted on 2009-09-09 at 13:03:33ID: 25295016

Also, have you tried refreshing the Files Panel (circular single arrow icon or hitting F5)?

by: andreyman3d2kPosted on 2009-09-09 at 13:05:34ID: 25295038

I actually tried this -- except I didn't use My Documents I just did the Desktop. (Not sure if there is a difference, for this purpose)

Created hello.php in DW in this desktop folder, where it showed up fine, but still nothing in C:\xampp\htdocs\mytestsite

Still no preview.

But here is the nutty thing - afterwards I changed the local folder back to C:\xampp\htdocs\mytestsite, and DW's directory showed hello.php as being in there!!!

by: jason1178Posted on 2009-09-09 at 13:06:55ID: 25295051

Okay, start using the Refresh icon in the Files panel and see if that fixes things....

by: andreyman3d2kPosted on 2009-09-09 at 13:07:13ID: 25295057

Yep, tried refreshing.

by: jason1178Posted on 2009-09-09 at 13:08:31ID: 25295075

And?

by: andreyman3d2kPosted on 2009-09-09 at 13:09:20ID: 25295088

I meant I've been trying refresh the entire time.. nothing.

by: andreyman3d2kPosted on 2009-09-09 at 13:12:47ID: 25295118

BTW earlier you said  "Keep the remote and testing server settings the same..."

My remote access is set to : None

That is the correct setting for local testing, right?

by: jason1178Posted on 2009-09-09 at 13:14:04ID: 25295131

Okay.

In the Files Panel, next to the name of the site, there is another pull down that has the following options:

Local view
Remote view
Testing server
Repository view

How is that set?

-----------------------

In the Site Definition, under Local Info, is the cache Enabled?

by: andreyman3d2kPosted on 2009-09-09 at 13:16:43ID: 25295155

Set to: Local View

Cache is Enabled

by: jason1178Posted on 2009-09-09 at 13:17:29ID: 25295163

>> BTW earlier you said  "Keep the remote and testing server settings the same..."
>> My remote access is set to : None

Try setting Remote Server to Local/Network option and mimic the Testing Server in all respects to see why this issue is occurring.

If you remember from your other question, I advised not using a local testing server.  You are seeing why I recommend this...

by: andreyman3d2kPosted on 2009-09-09 at 13:28:08ID: 25295226

"Try setting Remote Server to Local/Network option and mimic the Testing Server in all respects to see why this issue is occurring."

Tried it -- changed the setting from local testing to local editing/remote testing. Defined remote server as C:\xampp\htdocs\mytestsite

No changes, same thing happens.

"If you remember from your other question, I advised not using a local testing server.  You are seeing why I recommend this..."

I do remember, however I found out that our web host does not offer any services like MySQL or PHP, etc. unless we upgrade our package, which Powers That Be are reluctant to purchase without some demonstrable results first, so I am stuck with local testing for now..

by: jason1178Posted on 2009-09-09 at 14:04:56ID: 25295542

Okay, skipping back up a bit:

>> Created hello.php in DW in this desktop folder, where it showed up fine, but still nothing in C:\xampp\htdocs
>> \mytestsite
>> Still no preview

When you created hello.php, did you use the Put or Check-In buttons to transfer the file to C:\xampp\htdocs\ ?

by: andreyman3d2kPosted on 2009-09-09 at 15:00:27ID: 25295974

I used put.. did synchronize as well.

by: jason1178Posted on 2009-09-09 at 15:30:04ID: 25296142

Sigh.

Okay, one last attempt.  I did just install XAMPP on my XP Machine here at work and had no issues creating a page and moving it to C:\xampp\htdocs\ so we have to be looking at one of the following:

1. Bad WAMPP/XAMPP installs two straight times

2. Some form of security on that machine is preventing the writes from DW because you are writing outside of the Documents and Settings folder (which is v2media's idea).

I refuse to believe it is #1.  MySQL problems, yes.  But low level file operations, no.  So that leaves us with trying #2.  I assume you are running as a local adminstrator?

What you need to do is uninstall XAMPP (again) and reinstall (again).  When the installer finishes, it loads up that DOS window and steps you through some configuration options.  One of those options is to move the installation to a different path.  Move it into your Documents and Settings/Username/My Documents folder and start over on the site configuration.

If this still doesn't work, let me know.  There is one more thing we can try.

by: andreyman3d2kPosted on 2009-09-09 at 15:36:08ID: 25296189

Many thanks. I will try that tomorrow, when I get back into the office. Out of curiosity -- what is the other thing?

And is this a possibility -- a bad DreamWeaver install?

by: andreyman3d2kPosted on 2009-09-09 at 15:38:21ID: 25296204

Oh and yes, I am a local admin on the machine.

by: jason1178Posted on 2009-09-09 at 16:58:20ID: 25296554

That's going to be the last thing, yes. But my gut feeling is that this isn't a DW issue. DW failures are not this specific. Usually it's more of a "crashing constantly" thing.

Have you tried to replicate the problem at home?

by: andreyman3d2kPosted on 2009-09-09 at 18:12:30ID: 25296805

Unfortunately, I don't have DW at home, so I can't try here. I might acquire it this weekend, if this problem isn't solved, then I will see.

Also -- quite unfortunately -- I have Vista Home Premium at home. How does XAMPP mesh with that?

Beats me, I don't have Vista anywhere.  The XAMPP site says they are compatible.  Since we're trying to rule out problems and narrow things down to a single flaw maybe it's worth trying. I do have Windows 7 on a netbook.  I'll try to stick XAMPP on there tonight and let you know how it goes.

My guess is that your work machine has some form of security software or group policy that prevented the writes from working.  I've never seen a machine outside of a network that had any issues writing files with DW.

To be completely fair, v2Media had it right from the beginning in http:#a25290786 by calling it a permissions problem.  Would you mind if I asked a Moderator to split the points between us?

by: andreyman3d2kPosted on 2009-09-10 at 09:42:30ID: 25301961

You actually gave me a solution to the problem, but sure, whatever you think is fair. Thanks again.

by: jason1178Posted on 2009-09-10 at 10:34:31ID: 25302458

Yeah, I did but v2Media identified the problem correctly and deserves credit for that. My final solution was built off of his analysis, so it becomes an assist.

by: andreyman3d2kPosted on 2009-09-10 at 11:20:31ID: 25302868

Okay, sure. Let me know if I have to do anything on my end to reassign the points, etc. And thanks very much for your help as well, v2Media.

by: andreyman3d2kPosted on 2009-09-10 at 11:23:12ID: 31626188

You are a genius. Moving the xampp install to My Documents did the trick, now everything works, and DW actions are actually reflected outside DW. Any idea why this is? Does DW not have permission to write to the C:\ drive? Or was something being misdirected?

the new path for site & server is;

C:\Documents and Settings\Andrey\My Documents\xampp\htdocs\NewTestSite\

Anyway, thanks very much. Tons more questions to follow, surely, now that I can actually get to work : )

by: v2MediaPosted on 2009-09-10 at 15:32:04ID: 25305191

XP users' "My Documents" folder has special permissions that are not inherited from C:\ as other folder do. Administrators, System, and the user only has access and write perms. By installing xamp to My Docs, you're side-stepping the issue, not solving it.

MS have a great tool for restoring IIS NTFS permissions to default and I did a 10 minute search to find a similar tool that will reset permissions to a system drive. Didn't find one; but I found a great tutorial (Microsoft Certification primer) on NTFS permissions that would help you to at least identify the funky permissions in operation on the previous C:\xampp\htdocs install.

http://www.learnthat.com/Certification/learn/1253/Windows-XP-70-270-Free/page/15/

I experienced this problem a lot where files generated by an installed program are not viewable to the logged in user. The problem is always funky permissions. The way to investigate is to analyse the advanced permissions in effect from the top level inherited drive permissions, to the parent folder in question and all child objects. The solution is to reset permissions while logged in as the highest level user as possible (Domain Administrator or local Administrator).

by: andreyman3d2kPosted on 2009-09-10 at 15:53:56ID: 25305331

Thanks for the link! I started reading -- interesting stuff. Apparently I didn't see the security tab you mentioned because I had simple file sharing turned on. Computers are complicated. I will try to mess with it tomorrow when I get back in.

Thanks again.

by: v2MediaPosted on 2009-09-10 at 16:05:04ID: 25305380

There you go; SFS isn't workable on a web development workstation. You have to be able to manage NTFS permissions directly (advanced file sharing).

by: jason1178Posted on 2009-09-10 at 16:25:44ID: 25305504

...and that's why v2Media deserved points.
