By the way, I found that I could not even connect with the Adobe test site (still complains about incorrect username/password) but I COULD connect with ftp.irs.gov using the username "anonymous" and no password. It seems Dreamweaver is having trouble with username/passwords, since both the Adobe test site and my own site require a username/password while the irs site only required a username.

Both the Adobe test site and my own site work fine with FTP using Transmit on the Mac or Filezilla.

I can't find a log report but I get the error that I have an incorrect username or password. But it seems strange because those exact credentials work with "Transmit."

Totally sure.

This might then be one of those rare cases where the DW client can't connect to the remote server or there is a deeper security setting that's blocking DW specifically but allowing the other programs to connect.

I did go through the steps on that link you sent me, but no luck. Here is the error message I am getting;
"An FTP error occured - cannot open server folder /public_html/test-site/. Access denied. The file may not exist, or there could be a permission problem."

I even set the permissions of the folder to 777, but still the same error message.

And I have tried using both ftp.michianait.net and michianait.net. Neither work.

I have also tried all 4 combinations of Remote/Testing server, but that didn't have an effect either.

I remember there is some trick about getting Dreamweaver ftp to work, but I can't remember what it is.

Don't do that.  Permissions for web users and FTP users are different.  Make sure the FTP user on this server does have adequate permissions on that folder. Additionally, that error message means the user name and password are correct so we're definitely into server configuration as the possible culprit.

/public_html/test-site/

So depending on how your FTP user is configured, the above could be the wrong path.  If you can get to the shell, go to that folder and issue a pwd command to get the complete path.  Then use that path in DW's remote folder field.  My concern is that the DW FTP is uploading the user to /home/username or something like that and /public_html/test-site can look like it's starting from the server root and the crappy DW client gets confused.  Using full server paths removes all confusion.

Unsure, I may be one of the few people to have never used cpanel.  I just use PuTTY and connect to the shell.

You can connect.  If you couldn't even make the connection it would tell you "bad password" or similar in the logs.

As I said, the error message says "incorrect username or password" so I assume that means I cannot connect at all.

You're reporting two different error messages:

Resolved! If I just leave the "Root directory" field in Dreamweaver blank, it works like a charm. The explanation I got from my hosting support tech was "When you connect to the ftp server, you're already in public_html/test-site. So when you add that as the directory, adobe dreamweaver thinks there is a directory called public_html/test-site inside of the directory test-site. You shouldn't actually need to specify a directory."
