There are many many sites with buttons, lines, backgrounds, etc.

http://www.tcs.org/internet.htm#GRAPHICS provides a list of a lot of such sites

If you want to build your own, you need a graphics program like Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro. Photoshop is a lot more expensive, but there are a lot of plugins available for it that won't work on the less expensive packages, and there are a lot of websites with tips and tricks for PhotoShop Users.

try ulead gif animator for animations (if you want to make your own)

http://www.ulead.com/ga/runme.htm

there is a free trial at the ulead web site.

regarding graphics in general, as singleton said, Photoshop is the best but is also incredibly expensive although if you look around you can get old versions for quite a bit less than the latest one.

Having just tried paint shop pro recently I would recommend that as well.

visit the paint shop pro web site.

http://www.jasc.com

and try out some of their demos. They, like ulead, have a gif animator as well.

Also try

http://www.datascribe.com.au/mirrors/nonags/

as there is an awful lot of freeware there. Some of which may do what you want for nothing.

I'd also agree on Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro and Gif Animator.

You could also try Adobe Illustrator (expensive) for graphics.

If you go with Adobe Photoshop and want to do animated gifs, I would go with Image Ready, because it works hand in glove with Photoshop. Gif Animator is a good choice if you don't go with Photoshop.

I like Adobe Illustrator as well. It is a vector graphic program, while Adobe Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro are bitmap image programs.

Ulead is pretty good and Paint Shop Pro is probably the best bang for your buck ... I believe for web graphics Photoshop is overkill.

Paint Shop Pro comes with a Gif Animation program.

I'd say you should definitely go take a look at www.macromedia.com. They have a very attractive softwarebundle based on Dreamweaver and Fireworks. Fireworks being the graphicsapplication and Dreamweaver the visual HTML editor. Both packages are available as 30 day trials.

Hope this set you on the right path
