web-based email

Hi

I would like to know about the development of a web based email (i.e., hotmail, yahoo, etc..). we have around 400-500 people and we would like to establish a similar service for us but of course the number of users is much smaller  (no more than 500  users)

My question is the following:

Is that consider to be a difficult thing to do ?
How much time is required for the development to be finished?
what is the more reliable/scalable etc.. methodology ( CGI, Php, et..)

PS: we have unlimited space and we do reseller program with one of the biggest web hosting company, therefore space is not an issue.

Your web site hosting company does not offer web-based e-mail?  The easiest way - find another company that does offer it - most of them do at no extra costs.  You will need to install software to make it happen & most hosting companies - unless you are on dedicated hosting - will not allow this.

> You need to strip mail from the server, and dump it in a local database. Then there must be way to login. Users must be able to delete mail, as well as forwarding mail.

If you have a running server, with PHP installed, setting up such a service is a snap with Horde/IMP. IMP is open source, so there's no costs involved. It's used at MANY websites that offer free-email services (an example www.portugalmail.com).

Well you could just purchase Microsoft Exchange Server - it comes with it's own built in Web Access which also gives users access to the scheduling, appointments, contacts etc. Very good, we use it here.

Avoid ColdFusion, unless you plan to buy a 3rd-party replacement for their CFMAIL and CFPOP tags, which are not reliable.

Since this is a duplicate (see Dorward's comment), and he won the other question, and 1 of his 2 suggestions was SquirrelMail, and I suggested SquirrelMail here, so therefore I should get 50,000 points a month for 6 months :D

No really, one might argue this should've been deleted a year ago... but pretty much everyone here contributed something in my opinion, so I vote either delete or split 7 ways.
