Question

OnBeforeUnload...????

Asked by: shiva2003

Hi!!

In my projects Shoppoing Cart,when the user tries to close the shopping cart abruptly without Checking out and closes the window , then a popup window should appear without closing the Cart Window and asking to reconsider his decision by offering some discounts.

And if he Clicks OK, then the PopUp window should close and the Cart window should be in tact

I've tried the Onbeforeunload event, it works fine but,
It also fires when the page is being refreshed.

Please help me out of how to avoid refreshing while using OnBeforeUnload()..???

Hi shiva,

I just wanted to point out that OnBeforeUnload is an IE event only. Mozilla, Opera, Netscape and Konqueror will not recognize it. I would recommend against using this "very" browser specific tag. I understand that you don't want people leaving in mid-stream, but you really are better off to let them.

I'm sorry Shiva,
The onBeforeUnload event handler is the "only" way to intercept a user when the X box is clicked. And unfortunately, IE is the only browser that recognizes it.

No problem, sometimes the correct answer is "you can't", and sometimes it's "Here's how"
Unfortunately in this case...

aside from the cross browser issues, you can prevent it from firing when the page is being refreshed. you just need to remove the eventListner for "known good refreshes".

here's a sample (if you're not totally turned off by the cross browser problems)

<HTML>
  <HEAD>
    <SCRIPT>
      var bPromptFirst = true;
    function closeIt()
      {
        if( bPromptFirst )
        event.returnValue = "Eat more spam";
      }
    </SCRIPT>
  </HEAD>
  <BODY onbeforeunload="closeIt()">
      <br>
      <br>
      <a href="http://www.experts-exchange.com/Web/WebDevSoftware/Q_20678970.html">accidentally go away</a><br>
      <br>

      <a href="http://www.experts-exchange.com/Web/WebDevSoftware/Q_20678970.html" onclick="bPromptFirst = false">reload the page(or other know good navigation)</a>
  </BODY>
</HTML>

hello?

One of the previous discussion solves your problem.
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Web/Web_Languages/JavaScript/Q_10953601.html

Although the solution does not complete distinguish an unload event, at least it will enable you to distinguish between closing the window and remain in the same window (does not detecting moving to different websites.)

As regarding cross browser issues, I would strongly recommend don't bother with it.  Unless your site is designed for audience with specific needs (i.e. geeks - no offence intended, I'm one too), the percentage of general public using IE is higher than 95%.  (the rest: Netscape 1%, Opera 1% miscellaneous 3%... or less.)  It is really not worth spending any time on compatability issues.  It's not like someone who uses Lynx will buy something anyway.
