The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Which technology to use for web development?

Hi, I've been tasked with creating a simple web-site for an antiques shop. My client wants the site to display all the antiques which they sell and they require the abilty edit the web site content (ie. catagorize items, upload photos and descriptions etc.).

I'm a C# developer who has never worked with web-technologies, so I'm looking for a tool which is relatively easy to learn. I'm currently thinking of using Ajax or possibly Dreamweaver. Can anyone advise?

I would give Dreamweaver a serious look.

Dreamweaver is good for WYSIWIG design and text editing, and has some automated JS and CSS features, but the key here is that the client wants to edit the site themselves. This gets sensitive. What you're talking about is a CMS (Content Management System).

I seriously suggest you look into blogging software, such as WordPress or Expression Engine. Blogging platforms are quickly becoming recognized as powerful foundations for any kind of website. Many of these PHP based platforms are open source and well supported. I would suggest WordPress because it is supported most by it's loyal community. It also supports thousands of free plugins that you can find online that can facilitate all kinds of dynamic web features like shopping carts, search engine optimization, forms, etc.

WordPress's will allow your client to edit text, navigation, imagery, etc. There's even services out there that will integrate your Photoshop designs, or your XHTML/CSS into a WordPress template for you.

Here's a few:
http://www.psd2html.com/
http://design2xhtml.net/
http://www.wpcustomization.com/index.php
http://www.designerschopshop.com/

Keep in mind that you will need to host such a site privately, not on Wordpress.com. Wordpress.org is where you will find support for the open source platform.

Here's some sites that are powered by blogging software, and I believe WordPress:

http://www.persiel.net/v7/
http://www.designfruit.com/jasongaylor/blog/
http://www.jasonsantamaria.com/
http://www.31three.com/ (This one is Expression Engine, and you can find info about it here)

There's also a WordPress Zone here on EE.

If you're a C# programmer, you should also seriously consider ASP.Net.  You'll build using Visual Studio, there are lots of debugging tools, and there are a fair number of free examples of code written in C#.  You'll have to have IIS as a front end.  You can have SQL Express (free) as the back end db, assuming you want one, or you can use MySQL (if money is an issue).

Then you can walk into the whole Microsoft garden of products and use SharePoint for editing the files.

However, if you don't really want to do a lot of programming, I think uzzidesign is right and you should consider an existing framework, like blogging software.

I have used ASP.NET, mostly in VB, because I prefer it.  (yes, I do know how to write straight C++ windows applications)  You can do about anything with it.  There is however a lot of coding to do--perhaps less with each version of Visual Studio, but still it is rather involved.

You could obviously use a database that offers categories and items and such and the items telling all about the item as well as the name of the associated image. You could then make an admin page with upload capabilities which throws the photo into a folder and you associate it with the item in the database.
From the users perspective they'd visit a page, you'd show some default items, with the ability to click a category. You'd hit the database to get all of the categories, and display them. The user would choose one and you'd hit the database for that category to show them exactly what they wanted to see.

It can all be done for sure.  But it will required, database design, an admin page, and upload page, and user pages.  As far as user editable content, if you mean they just want to categorize things, then this could be done through admin pages and a database.

Worpress does off nice stuff and an already made product is certainly quicker.
