Question

Cannot open Outlook 2007 in XP

Asked by: RRStewart

Anytime I try to open Outlook 2007 whether in normal or safe mode I get the following error message.  "Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook.  Cannot open the Outlook window.  The set of folders cannot be opened.  The file C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst is not a personal folders file."  Within that folder I find the following files  Outcmd.dat, Outlook.NK2, Outlook.srs, Outlook.xlm and Outlprnt.  There is no .pst file.  I have move the entire folder out and still receive that message and it creates and empty Outlook folder.  I have tried to create a new profile and still get the same error message.  I tried renaming the .NK2 file to Outlook.pst, still the same error message.  Help!

I think you are looking at the wrong folder. Outlook has two folders under Documents and Settings, in order to see all of them you have to make sure that your computer shows all hidden and system files:

One is under Application Data -> Microsoft -> Outlook
The other one is under Local Settings -> Application Data -> Microsoft -> Outlook

One stores the NK2 and other smaller files and the other one stores the OST and PST files. Try looking into both folders, and make sure you find them both

If you cannot even create a new profile (which will find the proper folder for you), then perhaps Outlook itself is having a problem. Consider either an Office Repair using Word or Excel to get to that functoin, or, uninstalling and reinstalling Office. Make sure (at least for now) that no other version of Office is also installed. .... Thinkpads_User

Efusion, thanks!  I was only looking in the folder from the error message.  When I looked into the folder under "local setting" I found the Outlook.pst file which had a size of 0 and there was a larger size file called Outlook1.  I moved the .pst file out of the folder and renamed the larger file to Outlook.pst.  Started Outlook and things now work again.  Thanks for the information on the other location!
