How to install custom icon on selected location on google maps api

I am using Google Maps API on my website and I will need to put different types of markers in it and I would like to categorize them using different types of icons. e.g. T for terminal, P for parking. I found this one:
http://www.google.com/mapfiles/thanksgiving.html

But on the sample in the URL above, the markers are set randomly. How can I create markers in Google Maps API so I can set the icon for each marked location on the map?
