Invite friends from other apps (GMail, Yahoo)

When a user signs up to my app I would like them to be able to invite friends automatically by importing their friends email list from GMail.

Does anyone know how this can be done in PHP?

Also, I am using CodeIgniter so if there is a library solution that would be great.
