Logging users operations in Web Applications

We have developed an Web application, in which multiple users will be logged in a given time.

I would like to know the following things..
   1) the best way for tracking what each user is doing..(ie., what operation he is performing)...?
   2)"in general how such a feature will be developed in web applications" ?
   3) What data will be generally logged.. ? Whether complete operations details will be logged or only partial details will be logged.. ?

What about just using log4j, obviously logging the current user?

I know log4j provides a mechanism of logging some data onto file..

I would like to know, whether somebody has come across such a feature..of tracking the operations..
and what data generally will be logged. ?

Well of course you can log what you want. I would think that would generally be the way to do it

Yes, I *can* log whatever I want..  :)

But I would like to know, Whether somebody has done this.. before ! & can give me some ideas or references on this topic ..!

I have developed my own classes to keep track each user what activities / operations he has done .. etc.,

if you want to be specific in each functionalities better develop by your own ...

For example, if an each has modified an profile, then do you prefer to store the profile data before and after modification..? or just that "you store only operation name"

What is the format that you followed to store the activities.. ?

Oh ...well.... It depends on the need ... But I have done in both in my separate web applications ..

So, I have been asked to keep track of all the changes including modification / deletion / logging / changes / edit etc..,

In my another application, I have keep  tracked

"Test User modified record "Record Identifier"
"Test User deleted record "Record Identifier"
"Test User added record "Record Identifier"
"Test User logged on record "Record Identifier"

all these are just formatting with DATE & Time ... so that we can filter out in a day / week / month ...

The best way to do that would probably be to use AOP so that the cross-cutting logging doesn't get entangled with the application code
