Question

Create photo gallery client can update?

Asked by: TequilaMockingbird

I'm working on developing a website for a client who wishes to be able to update the Photo Gallery section of their site themselves. I'm wondering if there's an easy solution for this client, short of using Contribute and giving them an editable region within a template? This client is not really conversant with Contribute, I'd hate to have to "train" them to use it.

On a similar note, is there a simple way of setting up a region on the home page where they can input weekly news updates, with photos? Again - I know I could set up a Contribute-editable region, but wonder how practical this would be.

What server languages/technologies will your web server support?

There are a number of premade gallery "apps" that will let you provide a way for this to happen.  If you can use PHP one example is http://gallery.menalto.com/ .

Let me know if you have a question or need more info.

Gallery is one good option, ZenPhoto is another.

You do not want to use Contribute for photo management if it all possible.  It really, really sucks at this.

However, for small content updates like the news, no problem there.  If you are looking for an integrated solution, then consider Joomla or Drupal which will allow you to set a CMS-based site that your users can update without any third-party software.  I know Gallery can be integrated in Joomla and I assume ZenPhoto can be too.

The site will be hosted on a server that supports both ASP and PHP, although the site is being created with ASP functions. I believe the news portion of the page has been taken care of at this point. But I'm still looking for photo gallery solutions.

Zenphoto looks like it would be difficult to incorporate into the existing look of the site. Gallery says it can. What I want is to keep the client's fingers out of the integrity of the site while allowing them to upload, organize, and caption photos that (from the website visitors' end) appear in a page that looks just like the rest of the site. Have you seen Gallery used this way?

Another option that was suggested to me is http://cutesoft.net/ASP.NET+Image+Gallery/default.aspx . Has anyone had any feedback on this app?

Gallery will do what you asked about.  I am not sure that I have personally used it but it is very popular and good.

The ASP.NET suggestion looks good but I am not familiar with it.  Of course I am not developing in ASP.NET at this time so that doesn't mean it isn't popular and good.  It looked good.

I would try both and see though.  Integration and usability will be something that only testing and trying will really tell.  Let us know if you have any other questions.

I've used both and Gallery "integrates" better, but ZenPhoto is the better application.
