I need to do a detailed performance assessment of a database-driven consumer web site, to assess performance from an end-user's point of view.
I know there are services like Keynote that seem to instrument browsers to assess the end-user-visible page load time, but they are too expensive. I'm also familiar with Web Trends and Google Analytics and log processing software, but I'm not clear they'll accurately capture the end-user perceived response time of pages.
What are the best tools currently available for measuring website performance?
(I'd be looking for Windows or Linux software solutions, or a hosted service.)
